A new landmark has officially opened above Stebnícka Magura in the Bardejov district – the Berzewiczová Tower, an observation platform offering sweeping views of the region.
Construction of the nearly 30-metre tower, which includes an observation deck, began in May 2023 and was completed in November 2024. The project, which cost over €257,000, was funded by the regional tourism organisation, the Tourism Ministry reports.
Radomír Jančošek, director of the Šariš – Bardejov Regional Tourism Organisation, highlighted that the tower’s total height reaches 29.6 metres, with the observation deck located 21 metres above the ground.
“The tower is built from reinforced concrete, with a metal staircase, and is one of the tallest in the Prešov Region,” said Jančošek. “Visitors must climb 104 steps to reach the top.”
Near a spa town
The tower on Stebnícka Magura lies along the main tourist route—the SNP Heroes' Hiking Trail. The hill of Stebnícka Magura can be reached by trails from Bardejovské kúpele, a spa town, as well as Stebník, Zborov, and Zlatý.
“The newly built observation tower is a replica of the Berzewiczová Tower, which was originally erected in 1905 on the same site and destroyed during the First World War in 1918,” explained Jančošek, as quoted by the SITA newswire. He noted that efforts were made to replicate the original structure as faithfully as possible.
The tower will be open to visitors year-round, with no time restrictions and free of charge.
“It is expected to serve as a further catalyst for tourism development in northeast Slovakia,” Jančošek added.
The tower offers sweeping views of the Čergovské Mountains, and on clear days, the Tatras are visible in the distance.
