In the little-known Hont region of southern Slovakia, a newly built wooden lookout tower is helping put the village of Hontianske Tesáre on the map. Rising above the landscape, it offers far-reaching views of the surrounding hills, the spa town of Dudince, and even into neighbouring Hungary.

The site includes a small chapel, a firepit and an information board, with more signage planned to help visitors interpret the area. Reached by a short, family-friendly walk, it is an easy addition to a day’s outing – especially for cyclists exploring the region’s well-marked trails.

A helping hand in the heart of Europe offers our travel guide to Slovakia.

Katarína Sabová, the village’s cultural officer, says the tower was carefully positioned to showcase both natural landmarks and the layout of Hontianske Tesáre, which today includes several formerly independent settlements.

The space is also being used for community events, including concerts, and lies not far from the Tesárska Gorge, where mysterious rock-cut dwellings known as dúpence have drawn curiosity for centuries.

Quiet, scenic and a touch mysterious, this new tower offers a welcome stop for those venturing off Slovakia’s beaten path.
