After a recent renovation, the Lajoška mountain chalet in south-eastern Slovakia’s Rudohorie range has reopened to visitors – this time, for all seasons. Once a hikers’ refuge, the chalet now anchors a broader ecotourism vision, complete with a contemporary twist: three new glass-walled cabins nestled nearby, part of a project titled Night Under the Stars at Lajoška.

Each sleek, wood-accented cabin is outfitted with modern interiors and flanked by simple outdoor seating – timber tables and benches inviting guests to linger over morning coffee or an evening under the Milky Way. The aim, according to local officials, is to blend comfort with conservation.

“Night Under the Stars at Lajoška is an excellent example of how tourism in our region can evolve in a way that is both sensitive and forward-thinking,” said Rastislav Trnka, governor of the Košice Self-Governing Region.

Lenka Vargová Jurková, executive director of the regional tourism board Košice Región Turizmus, said the cabins highlight the area’s promise as a destination for eco-conscious travellers. “Spending the night immersed in unspoilt nature also adds a unique dimension to stargazing,” she added.

A historic trail meets a modern concept

Tucked just steps from the Lajoška chalet, a century-old mountain refuge perched on Predná Holica in the Volovské Hills, these sleek glass cabins offer a contemporary retreat along Slovakia’s longest marked hiking trail. First built in 1914, the chalet lies directly on the Cesta hrdinov SNP – the Heroes of the Slovak National Uprising Trail – a storied route winding through the country’s rugged interior.

The cabins are easily reached from the village of Vyšný Klátov in the Košice-okolie district, yet feel worlds away. Deep in the heart of the Rudohorie mountain range, the surrounding landscape invites adventure year-round: think hikes and cycling trails in summer, and snow-dusted paths perfect for cross-country skiing come winter.
