In a bold move to redefine cultural tourism, the city of Zvolen has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the historic Pustý Hrad castle into a premiere destination. With upgrades to long-missing facilities and services, the project aims to highlight the castle’s rich heritage and draw visitors from near and far, Ľubica Mojžišová from the city’s press office told the TASR newswire.

Perched above Zvolen, Pustý Hrad is a national cultural monument and a key stop on the Pohronská Hradná Cesta cultural route.

Central to the revitalisation effort is the restoration of the castle palace at Horný Hrad (Upper Castle), which will soon boast a roof and an exhibition chronicling the castle’s archaeological and historical significance.

“The project also includes completing the renovation of the Lower Castle tower, where the interior will host chamber concerts,” Mojžišová said.

Additional plans include reconstructing the coining and metalworking workshop at Upper Castle and establishing an information centre near the main entrance gate.

The city intends to launch a public tender for contractors early this year and hopes to secure funding from the Slovakia Programme under the Investments Ministry. Work is expected to begin this summer, with the €1.3 million project completed within two years.

Mayor Vladimír Maňka (Smer) emphasised the use of authentic materials such as wood and stone to preserve the castle’s historical essence. “Visitor numbers are already growing, and with this investment, we expect even more interest,” he noted.
