A new tourist attraction has been created in Banská Štiavnica, central Slovakia, using state-of-the-art technologies: a visualisation of a long-defunct mining castle.
"The knowledge that a unique mining castle, the only one known in Slovakia, stood just a 20-minute walk from the city centre, kept us awake. It was clear to us that its physical reconstruction was out of the question, so we started thinking about augmented reality," said Igor Kuhn, Executive Director of the Regional Tourism Organisation Banská Štiavnica Region.
A helping hand in the heart of Europe offers for you Slovakia travel guide.
The organisation approached a company that operates the Journey in Time exhibition in Banská Štiavnica about mining history using holograms and virtual reality.
The result is an application showing the Glanzenberg mining castle in 3D.
For the first time in Slovakia
The app works by holding up a phone and looking at the Glanzenberg hill from Kalvária, the Old Castle and Javisko near the Červená Studňa. The user will see the outline of the castle The app can be downloaded from boards at each of the above-mentioned places by scanning a QR code.
"These heavily visited places are only meant to entice you to visit the archaeological site itself. Here, directly on the remains of the walls, the castle rises in its full beauty, people can see it up close and from the inside. Its history is accompanied by a knight in both audio and text form. The phone also shows them artifacts dug up here by archaeologists," explained Kuhn.
