Hiking tripsLiptovský Hrádok is considered to be the gateway to the Low Tatras. There are several valleys (doliny) running through this mountain area riddled with caves. Here are details of two of them. The first is recommended for a family with children, the second for adults. For each, reserve one day.

Hiking trips

Jánska dolina

Drive or take a bus from the Liptovský Hrádok train station to Liptovský Ján (west). If you're on a bus, get off at the crossroads before the village (ask the driver for Liptovský Ján, rázcestie), as the bus does not enter the village. Walk up the main road to the end of the village, where the blue trail through Jánska valley starts. Follow the marked trail up to the Horáreň Pred Bystrou (Pred Bystrou Forester's Lodge), then go back down.

Demänovská dolina - Chopok

Drive or take a bus from the Liptovský Hrádok train station to Liptovský Mikuláš, change there for the one heading to the Demänovská dolina path, and get off at the parking lot in front of the Jaskyňa Slobody. From that point, follow the blue trail that leads through the Demänovská dolina path up to Chopok, which at 2,023.6 metres above sea level, is the highest peak in the Low Tatras.
