Ski tourers heading to the High Tatras this season can breathe a sigh of relief—plans for a paid program on the slopes have been shelved, at least for now. Instead, a free, but stricter, test regime will be in place, Tatry Mountain Resorts (TMR) announced, just a day before the ski season kicked off in Tatranská Lomnica last week.

The resort beneath Lomnický štít, a popular peak, decided to postpone the introduction of fees for ski touring by a year. This was due to the current routing of the hiking trail, which overlaps with the ski slopes in several places and crosses them repeatedly, as well as the anticipated update to the visitor regulations, reports the website Korzár.

"The same applies to Štrbské Pleso," said Dušan Slavkovský, head of the Vysoké Tatry resort.

TMR's Vysoké Tatry mountain resort is made up of three ski resorts: Tatranská Lomnica, Štrbské Pleso, and Starý Smokovec.

During the winter season, ski tourers can use hiking trails that are not subject to seasonal closures. Their numbers in the Tatras are growing, including those moving along ski slopes. However, the hiking trail from Tatranská Lomnica to Skalnaté Pleso overlaps with the ski slope, prompting TMR and the TANAP national park to temporarily redirect the trail for the safety of hikers, ski tourers, and skiers. The redirected trail will be accessible free of charge.

A similar trail redirection will also take place at Štrbské Pleso.

The mountain resort decided to introduce fees for ski touring on its slopes in response to the growing number of ski tourers and frequent disregard for rules governing movement on the pistes.
