Jelšava manor house offers new and cheap accommodation experience

"If someone believes in ghost stories, they won't get much sleep," Martin Lipták, one of the men behind the concept, says.

The Coburg mansion in Jelšava, central-south Slovakia, the gradual restoration of which has taken nine years, is slowly becoming a magnet for domestic and foreign visitors alike. Last week its renovated north-west wing was unveiled.

Its new look comes thanks to a roughly million-euro grant from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism, writes the My Novohrad website.

The reconstruction of the mansion, whose lavish late-baroque redevelopment began in the 18th century but was never completed, has turned the vast building into a historical and ecological centre of the Gemer region.

Its northwestern wing now offers tourist services and facilities, but will also be an attractive place for organising various events.

A conference room with appropriate facilities and toilets was created and additional facilities and a cafe are also planned. Carpentry and blacksmith workshops are expected to be added.

Sleeping in a glass-walled unit

In addition to the renovated wing, the extensive building has a special attraction in that it offers accommodation for the night in glass-walled units.

Martin Lipták, co-founder of the Čierne Diery civic association behind the idea of the accommodation said that they do not see it as a hotel or accommodation. It is an experiential exhibition allowing visitors to spend time in the mansion as they see fit.

He emphasised that it is important for people to immediately see the condition of historic sites in Slovakia.

"We decided to show people the monument in its authentic state. They can see all its layers, from the 18th century to the insensitive interventions of socialism," explained Lipták.

We have prepared an information brochure and guide will be available to visitors, he added.

Guests will decide on the price

As for the price, he said: "We will not collect money because we don't want people to donate to us, but to the coffers of this mansion so that there is something to finance future maintenance work. People can decide for themselves whether they want to contribute and how much. "

Lipták noted that it worked for them with the forest sauna in Spišský Hrhov, eastern Slovakia, which is booked a year in advance for the third year.

"We have two units here that serve as accommodation facilities. Maybe we'll expand it over time. Those interested in an adventurous night must bring a mat or sleeping bag, according to how they intend to spend the night," Lipták noted.

There is also a simple kitchen and a shower in the mansion.

Finally, swallows and bats fly there in the evening.

"If someone believes in ghost stories, they won't get much sleep," concluded Lipták with a smile.
