The popular Banisko recreational area near Brezno, central Slovakia, will see the construction of its third reservoir in three years.
The aim is to minimise the risk of floods during heavy rainfall, as water retention will reduce the flow of water in the surrounding streams and rivers. It will also play an important role in the event of fires, and it is intended to make the region under the Low Tatras even more attractive to tourists.
Four-year effort pays off
"I am happy that after four years of work we have managed to obtain funding for the project of a small water reservoir in Banisko. It is another piece of the puzzle of projects to support water retention in the area and the third water reservoir that we be built within three years," said Brezno Mayor Tomáš Abel, adding that the water reservoir will also contribute to the development of tourism.
He specified that the reservoir is designed as a reinforced concrete structure and will have a 77.13-metre-long wall on the left and 24.3-metre-long one in front.

A discharge opening with a sluice gate will be placed in the wall. "The reservoir wall will have openings for the installation of a mill wheel in the future," Abel added. In addition, a walkway is planned along the right bank of the reservoir.
The reservoir is to be 68 metres long, the water surface area will be 900 square metres, and its volume is expected to be 1,850 cubic metres. The maximum depth will be four metres.
A location with an exceptional tower
The water reservoir will be built in the popular Banisko recreation area near the 40-metre-tall Horné Lazy observation tower, which is the second highest in Slovakia.
The Brezno municipality, in cooperation with the Regional Tourism Organisation of the Horehronie Region, is continuing to make the area even more attractive by building additional infrastructure. Last year, a refreshment stand was added to the existing mix of a historical orchard, educational trails with gazebos, benches.
"[The stand] is a simple structure that is divided into two parts, namely a space reserved for the sale of small refreshments and a space with sanitary facilities. It is a necessity that has been missing here for years," explained Abel.
Also, signposts have been installed on the local tourist route, which are part of the unified route marking in the entire region.
A buffet with toilets was built at the observation tower. In addition, children can look forward to playing a memory game on site.
Panoramic panels with descriptions of individual peaks or hills were also placed on the construction of the observation tower, from which visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Low Tatras and their surroundings.
