In Bratislava, spring begins with 90 wines and a stroll through hidden cellars

Koštúfka reveals the deep roots of Slovak wine-making — and a few bottles you will not find anywhere else.

In the foothills of the Little Carpathians, just 20 minutes by tram from central Bratislava, a quiet neighbourhood steeped in wine-making tradition bursts into life each spring. Beneath the narrow streets of Rača, centuries-old cellars open to the public for Koštúfka, a two-day festival where wine is not merely poured — it is narrated, celebrated, and generously shared.

Held on 4 and 5 April, Koštúfka v račanských pivnicách (Wine-tasting in the Rača cellars) draws hundreds of visitors to Rača, a former wine-growing village now part of Bratislava. The event’s name — “Koštúfka” is an old local word for a tasting — hints at its informal, convivial spirit. At 16 family-run wineries, guests are invited to sample a selection of around 90 wines, many of which are rarely available beyond the region.

The €30 entry fee includes tastings at all participating cellars (40 tasting coupons, not unlimited consumption), a keepsake wine glass, a catalogue with a detailed map, and vouchers redeemable towards bottle purchases.

The route between cellars covers 2.5 kilometres and is easily walkable. To navigate the event smoothly, visitors receive a map marking each cellar, most of which are tucked into private homes.

While the full tasting list spans whites, reds and rosés, one name stands out: Račianska Frankovka. This local variety, a deep-hued red also known as Blaufränkisch, was once served at the court of Empress Maria Theresa. Today it is prized both for its noble lineage and its high levels of resveratrol, an antioxidant often linked to heart health.

Still, pacing is key. With over 90 wines on offer, even the most enthusiastic guest will not make it through the full list. Many visitors adopt a strategy: pick a few winemakers, ask questions, linger. Some cellars serve light nibbles, while restaurants along the route offer heartier Slovak fare.
