NATO chief Rasmussen to visit Slovakia in mid-May

NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen will visit Slovakia on May 14-15 to hold talks with top Slovak officials, the Foreign and European Affairs Ministry informed. Rasmussen, who is due to leave office on October 1, will meet President Ivan Gašparovič, Prime Minister Robert Fico, Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák and Defence Minister Martin Glváč and assess the 10 years of Slovakia’s NATO membership. Also broached during the meetings should be Slovakia’s priorities with respect to the upcoming summit of the organisation in Wales (September 4-5), the TASR newswire wrote. Officials will also engage in talks regarding the current developments in Ukraine and the measures taken by NATO to ease tensions in the country’s east and south. Other topics will include NATO’s future engagement in Afghanistan after the planned completion of the ISAF mission. Rasmussen is also expected to deliver a speech at the Globsec security forum in Bratislava on May 15. The upcoming visit of the NATO secretary general will be the third of his term in office.
