Prosecutor’s office: Švecová’s election was OK

PROSECUTOR-General’s criminal department secretary Peter Šufliarsky found no legal reasons for taking action regarding the election of the Supreme Court chair held in September, the TASR newswire reported on October 6.

PROSECUTOR-General’s criminal department secretary Peter Šufliarsky found no legal reasons for taking action regarding the election of the Supreme Court chair held in September, the TASR newswire reported on October 6.

On September 16, Daniela Švecová was elected as the new Supreme Court chair by the Judicial Council and appointed to her post by President Andrej Kiska on October 2. The election was challenged as flawed by former Supreme Court and Judicial Council chair Štefan Harabin who cast doubt over the legitimacy of the election, citing incongruity between the number of issued (17) and received (15) ballots.

Šufliarsky met with newly-elected Judicial Council chair Jana Bajánková over the matter.

“Based on conclusions of the working meeting, Prosecutor-General’s criminal department secretary Peter Šufliarsky found no legal reason to take action in either the criminal or non-criminal spheres,” said Prosecutor-General’s spokesperson Andrea Predajňová, as quoted by TASR.

According to Bajánková, the election was carried out in line with the Slovak law, with minutes published online and no complaints received from members of the Judicial Council or candidates.
