Not fit for a king
King ArthurStarring: Clive Owen, Keira Knightley, Ioan Gruffudd, Stephen Dillane, Stellen Skarsgard,Directed by: Antoine Fuqua, Running time: 126 minRating: 4.5 out of 10IT'S a tricky thing, history. Sometimes it repeats itself. Other times, it gets twisted and manipulated by those in power. And, in some cases, it intersects with mythology, making it difficult to tell where the legend ends and the truth begins.
An extended family
SLOVAKIA belongs to those European countries for which emigration has been an inseparable part of national history. Across the world Slovak communities were established as Slovaks migrated to other countries in search of a new life and new opportunities. For most of the past 300 years, Slovakia was a part of other states and so emigration also offered a chance for self-realisation.
Levoča hosts woodcarvers
THE EASTERN Slovak town of Levoča will host an outdoor workshop of artists from the Visegrad Four countries between August 13 and 21. Up to 20 sculptors, wood carvers and painters from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia will create their works in the main square and nearby streets of the town in front of spectators' eyes. The workshop takes place during the Days of Master Paul, a festival dedicated to one of the greatest European woodcarvers who ever lived on the territory of current Slovakia, which runs from June to October.
Looking for gold? Pan it out yourself
ALMOST all Slovak streams are gold bearing, or so claim competitive Slovak goldpanners. But in Slovakia you will have to look for other means of making a fortune since no goldpanner has got rich this way thus far.Panned gold flakes, gold dust to be exact, are so tiny that it is sometimes impossible to weigh them and they are actually worthless with an estimated price of about one crown. Thus their only real value can be enjoyed in competitions and by amateur goldpanners, who keep them as souvenirs.
Splendour of youth and talent
MATURITY and youth... Can they come together? Can an artistic talent manifest itself at a very early age or does it need many years to be formed and refined? Such questions arose during the final concert of the Third International Master Classes Musica Arvenzis on July 22 at the Mirror Hall of the Primate's Palace in Bratislava.Nine young musicians - six pianists and three violinists - from various countries, aged between 10 and 24 years, appeared on stage that evening. They performed compositions by Chopin, Liszt, Bramhs, Ravel, Telemann, Vieuxtemps, and Souza.
Slovak capital cleans up
THE SLOVAK capital has formed a special police unit to discipline homeless people, drunkards, and other groups that make a mess or pester pedestrians in the city's most exposed areas. The police unit was formed at the end of July and consists of 12 officers. It began clearing the streets of the ill-behaved groups focusing mainly on the city centre including Stará tržnica market place, Kamenné námestie square, and Kollárovo námestie square. The unit also paid visits to the main railway station area, and Poštová street.
United Kingdom mainly attracts youth
THE COMMUNITY of Slovaks living in the United Kingdom started to grow after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. According to the web page of the Slovak Ministry of Culture, the official number of Slovaks living in Britain today is around 1,000.In the early 1980s the former Czechoslovakia was included in the list of countries that could participate in the UK au-pair program. As a result a large number of Slovak girls and young women started to flow to Britain to learn English while helping British families.
Strong ties bind Slovaks living around the world
By helping to expand Slovakia's economy through US investment, Slovak ex-patriates can provide more opportunity for Slovakia's young people to make a successful life for themselves and their families. Many Slovak-American organisations are very interested in helping the younger generations in America understand and appreciate their Slovak heritage and the contributions that Slovaks have made in the United States, said Jan Eric Surotchak, chair of the Friends of Slovakia (FOS).
