Anti-drug unit chief steps down
THE NATIONAL anti-drug unit is to get a new boss. Its current head, Marián Pecko, is to leave the unit on May 1 at his own request, according to the Sme daily. But he will remain with the police, serving in the office fighting organised crime.

New logistics centre in Zavar Industrial Park
HB Reavis Management Banská Bystrica will build an industrial and logistics centre worth approximately Sk6.7 billion near the town of Trnava, in western Slovakia. The investor predicts that the centre will create 960 new jobs, company spokeswoman Želmíra Rácová told SITA.
Euro expectations build
AS MAY 7, the day on which Slovakia will hear the European Commission's verdict on its application to join the eurozone, approaches, debate about the new currency is growing more intense in Slovakia. Slovak state officials are confident that Slovakia now meets all the nominal economic criteria for the country to adopt the euro and say that the battle is now shifting from economics to diplomacy.
Lipšic: Tunnelling proves NPF is useless
THE NATIONAL Property Fund (NPF) paid Sk100,000 to the Nitra-based Media Vision Agency (MVA) to collect copies of media articles in which the Fund was mentioned and produce copies of its research budget, the Sme daily wrote on April 11.
Archbishop prays for Tiso
THE CONTROVERSIAL figure of Jozef Tiso, president of the wartime fascist Slovak state, has been honoured by a top representative of the Roman Catholic church in Slovakia. The Archbishop of Trnava, Ján Sokol, celebrated a requiem mass for Tiso on April 18, the 61st anniversary of his execution as a traitor. The Conference of Bishops of Slovakia said it was a private act by Archbishop Sokol.
Another pyramid scheme manager sentenced
THE FORMER owner of the non-licensed deposit company AGW, Matúš Grega, has been jailed for 8.5 years and fined Sk2 million (€61,600) on fraud charges. It follows a plea bargain between Grega and the prosecutor, approved on April 21 by the Special Court.

THE GOVERNMENT is creating a special reserve in next year's budget for low-income people, young families and pensioners, the Pravda daily reported.
Ida Kelarová prepares Roma children for big concert
ROMA children from the Wild Poppies programme have started preparing for a major concert, which should take place in the autumn, under the leadership of well-known singer Ida Kelarová. The SITA newswire reported the plans, announced by Lucia Čierna, programme co-ordinator for the civic association ProDonum.
Post stores thousands of undeliverable items
AT the beginning of this year, Slovak Post counted more than 160,000 items at its storage site in Banská Bystrica that were undeliverable due to an incomplete or missing address. Around 600 such items are processed daily at the Postal Registration and Deposit Office in Trnava, Andrea Pivarčiová, spokesperson for Slovak Post, told SITA.
