Government promises EU cash for marginalised Roma
SLOVAKIA will be able to obtain at least Sk6.5 billion in EU funds over the next few years to help the poorest Roma, Deputy Prime Minister Dušan Čaplovič announced on March 26, after a regular cabinet meeting. At the session ministers adopted a concept for Roma community development, the ČTK newswire wrote. However, according to earlier studies, Sk11 billion is needed just to build apartments for Roma currently living in ramshackle settlements. More money is required for better education.

DURING four years of operation so-called "saving nests" have rescued a total of 14 Slovak babies, Anna Ghannamová, the president of A Chance for the Unwanted non-governmental organisation told the SITA newswire.

THOUSANDS of people gathered in Bratislava on March 25 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Candlelit Demonstration, which is considered the beginning of the end of the communist regime in the country. About 2,000 people met in front of the small church in Hviezdoslavovo Square in Bratislava, where one of the largest protest rallies against communism and for religious freedom and human rights took place on March 25, 1988, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote.
