Union and state fail to reach an agreement
SLOVAKIA may face another arbitration proceeding as a result of its law banning health insurance companies from extracting profits from their businesses. The Dutch insurance company Eureko, a shareholder of insurer Union Poisťovňa, may initiate arbitration proceedings, the SITA newswire wrote.

Insurance market reached even split
LAST year, the ratio between life insurance and non-life insurance policies in Slovakia reached 50:50 for the first time. This means the Slovak market now more closely resembles that in western countries, where life insurance policies are more widespread.
Top policeman becomes a person of interest
POLICE Vice-President Michal Kopčík has been named as a person of interest in three recent criminal cases.The most recent case involves Ernest Šimonič, a witness in the country’s biggest organised crime case, who allegedly saw Kopčík illegally sell a machine gun, the Sme daily reported on September 17.
Slovakia to pay for seized property
THE SLOVAK government will pay almost Sk150 million (€35 million) to descendants of the Révay family for land and forests seized by the communist regime in the former Czechoslovakia. The family lost the property after the communist takeover and failed to get it back under post-1989 restitution proceedings. Both sides agreed upon a friendly settlement by which the state agreed to pay the family a total sum for the property and damage, costs and expenses. The European Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg confirmed the settlement on September 23, the ČTK newswire wrote. The dispute began in 1992.
U.S. visa waiver nears
THIS YEAR has witnessed considerable progress in cooperation between the US Embassy in Bratislava and the Slovak government on moving towards a visa waiver for Slovak tourists travelling to the U.S. The U.S. government is now likely to decide by the end of October whether Slovakia has fulfilled all the criteria necessary to allow visas to be waived for its citizens. Of particular importance is the number of refused visa applications during the last U.S. fiscal year, which will be known after September 30, U.S. Embassy spokesman Keith Hughes wrote in a press release. According to Hughes, the final two agreements necessary for the cancellation of the visa obligation should be signed soon, the SITA newswire wrote.

THE RECENT bus crash in Croatia that killed 14 Slovak tourists and injured many others was an unfortunate reminder of the value of travel insurance. Because all the passengers were insured, millions of crowns will be paid to cover the cost of their medical treatment, transport back to Slovakia, and transport of the bodies, the Hospodárske Noviny wrote.
Assistance services set to expand
CLIENTS typically start paying attention to insurance assistance services only after they experience an accident or a breakdown. And while clients are familiar with assistance services provided with travel or car insurance, assistance services to property or legal protection insurance are a relative novelty on the Slovak market.
