Finance Ministry announces final figures on government deficit for 2010
The state budget ended last year with a deficit of €4.436 billion, which means that it grew by €925 million month-on-month in December and by as much as €1.645 billion when compared to the deficit posted in 2009, the Finance Ministry announced on Monday, January 3, as reported by the TASR newswire. Nevertheless, the final figures were better than what had been expected in the revised state budget that the Finance Ministry had released at the end of November 2010 which had raised the originally-expected deficit of €3.746 billion to €4.54 billion.

Miroslava Zemková of SRo is picked to be interim head of Radio and Television Slovakia
Radio and Television Slovakia (RTS) – the new public service institution that came into existence on Saturday, January 1 following the merger of Slovak Television (STV) and Slovak Radio (SRo) – will be temporarily headed by Miroslava Zemková who has previously served as the SRo director, the TASR newswire reported. This was the decision of Speaker of Parliament Richard Sulík (SaS), his personal assistant Tatiana Tóthová told TASR. Sulík had two candidates to choose from as RTS interim director as STV director Štefan Nižňanský was also a candidate.
SNS says it will take Language Act amendment to Slovakia’s Constitutional Court
The Slovak National Party (SNS) plans to submit the amendment to the State Language Act to the Constitutional Court if it passes again in Parliament, SNS vice-chair Rafael Rafaj told the TASR newswire on Sunday, January 2. The amendment has been vetoed by President Ivan Gašparovič and is now heading back to parliament, which will likely override the presidential veto.
Slovakia's budget year begins with projected cut in deficit to €3.81 billion
As of January 1, with the new state budget becoming effective, the Slovakia’s deficit is set to fall from last year's €4.54 billion to €3.81 billion in 2011. Total state revenues are projected in the budget at €13.15 billion while expenditures are set at €16.96 billion, the TASR newswire wrote. The consolidated state administration deficit should fall from €5.1 billion reported in 2010 to €3.4 billion in 2011, with revenues reaching €23.3 billion and expenditures €26.7 billion. The public finance deficit should fall gradually from the 7.8 percent of GDP last year to 4.9 percent this year and 3.8 percent in 2012.
President Gašparovič objects to doubts being raised about the euro
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič – in his New Year's speech on Saturday, January 1 – expressed his disagreement with doubts being cast about the euro, the common EU currency, the TASR newswire reported. "This isn't a good approach. Even though I can't evaluate exactly what difficulties we would have been in today without the euro, maybe we would have got lost like lonely runners on the difficult journey through the economic crisis with our own currency," Gašparovič said in his speech, adding that it is better to face the problems together.
