Making growth inclusive
THE CHALLENGE for any fast-growing economy is to make its growth more inclusive so that the disparities and gaps between regions, and between the rural and urban parts of countries, which growth often brings with it, can be bridged. So believes Rajiva Misra, India’s ambassador to Slovakia. Misra, who previously served in Croatia as the representative of his country of over a billion people and hundreds of languages and dialects, says that Slovakia has a distinct character, like that of an individual, and for him the description “little big country” is very apt.
Labour Code prompts strong reactions
THE PATH to create tens of thousands of new jobs has now been paved: this is how Labour Minister Jozef Mihál characterised the adoption of one of the most important pieces of legislation pursued by the government in 2011, its amendments to the Labour Code. Prime Minister Iveta Radičová quickly backed her minister’s assessment and added that the amendment, which was still awaiting the signature of Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič as of July 21, could boost employment levels and improve employees’ certainty about their jobs.

Hopes for Indian car plants dashed
PLANS for the arrival of a new Indian car manufacturing plant in Slovakia have apparently fallen through, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote in late May. Fifth audit attempt thwarted
THE FINANCE Ministry has attempted for the fifth time in less than a year to conduct an audit of the finances of the Supreme Court. Even though the Constitutional Court imposed a large fine on Štefan Harabin, the court’s president, for refusing to allow the previous audit attempts, the fifth visit did not go any smoother.
All mouth and no trousers?
IF POLITICS were nothing but a source of entertainment, and if the only harm its gallery of weirdos could potentially do to their audience was to serve up indigestible mental junk food, then some current parliamentary deputies might be considered perfectly suited to their role in the political reality show.

Police say their plan to capture Mello was thwarted by media announcement
Slovakia’s Police Corps has stated that it was ready to arrest Karol Mello, the indicted organiser of a double murder in 2004, but its efforts were thwarted because the media had reported information on the issuance of an international arrest warrant before the police were notified, according to a statement released by Police Corps Presidium spokesperson Denisa Baloghová on July 21, the TASR newswire reported. "We waited for an international arrest warrant to be issued, based on which we were planning to capitalise on the 'moment of surprise' in conjunction with international police forces and capture Karol M.
