ELECTIONS 2012: Fico says he expects to be asked to form next government
Shortly after polling stations closed on March 10 and exit poll results indicated that the Smer party would emerge as by far the biggest party, its leader Robert Fico said that he expected his party to be charged by President Ivan Gašparovič with forming the next government. One exit poll suggested that Smer would get half of the mandates – i.e. 75 of the 150 seats in parliament – while the other forecast that Fico’s party would get 69 seats.

Fico wins sweeping victory
“I HAD a secret dream of one million voters, which we have achieved,” said Smer leader Robert Fico, after it became clear that his party had won a clear majority in Slovakia’s March 10 general election. Its 1,134,280 votes meant Smer attracted 44.4 percent of the vote and thereby won 83 seats in the 150-seat parliament, a majority of 16 over all other parties. It is the first time since the end of communism in 1989 that any single party has enjoyed a majority in the Slovak parliament.

The Smer party has maintained its position as the far largest party in the Slovak parliament following elections held on March 10. Based on preliminary results revealed by the Slovak Statistics Office, Smer got 44.41 percent, followed by the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) with 8.82 percent. The turnout was higher than expected, at 59.11 percent.

“PEOPLE deserve certainties,” heralded the main election slogan of the formerly opposition Smer party and, after a massive victory in which it won 83 parliamentary seats – and hence a clear majority – in the national elections held on March 10, Robert Fico’s political project is now determined to deliver these “certainties”.

Some Slovaks who had been granted Hungarian citizenship during the last two years were prevented from voting in today’s Slovak parliamentary elections because, according to the terms of a 2010 amendment to the Citizenship Act, any Slovak who accepts the citizenship of another state automatically loses their Slovak citizenship, the TASR newswire reported.

A total of 5,956 polling stations closed at 22:00 across Slovakia ending the country’s one-day general election, the eighth democratic vote to select members of parliament since the fall of communism in 1989. The only polling station which will close later will be the one in Šoporňa, the TASR newswire reported.

A HUGE fire has destroyed one of the most well-preserved medieval castles in Slovakia, Krásna Hôrka, near Rožňava (Košice Region). The fire began on Saturday (March 10) afternoon, and was probably sparked by grass burning nearby, the SITA newswire reported.

Eighty-five candidates out of the almost 3,000 that were initially included on the slates of the 26 parties running in this Saturday's Slovak parliamentary elections will not now take part, the TASR newswire reported on Thursday, March 8. This is the definitive number of drop-outs as the deadline for candidates to withdraw, or for parties to remove candidates from their slates, expired on Thursday, March 8, at 7:00.
ELECTION 2012: Poll: Smer on 40%; OĽaNO and SMK on course for seats
If the general election had taken place at the beginning of March, Smer would have gained 40 percent of the votes, enough to qualify for 73 MPs and hence ended just short of an absolute majority, according to a poll carried out by the MVK agency on March 3-5 for private broadcaster TV Markíza that was released on Thursday, March 8.

Judicial Council again fails to elect Supreme Court vice-president
Supreme Court president and Judicial Council chairman Štefan Harabin again omitted from the agenda of a Judicial Council session on Thursday, March 8, a vote to select a new Supreme Court vice-president. Harabin justified the decision by saying that only 12 out of 18 council members were present, and it would therefore not be "dignified" to elect his deputy.
