Mello sues Belizean government for revoking his permanent residency
Karol Mello, a Slovak fugitive who has been charged with organising at least three murders back in 2003 and 2004, has filed a lawsuit against the Belizean government for revoking his permanent residency permit, the TASR newswire reported on August 30.
Bratislava hotels score high in survey

Slovakia commemorates SNP
Several events took place in Slovakia to commemorate the 68th anniversary of the beginning of Slovak National Uprising (SNP), an armed insurrection organised by the Slovak resistance movement during the Second World War. The uprising broke out in Banská Bystrica on August 29, 1944, and even though it was officially suppressed in October 1944, the rebels continued to operate in secret, fighting and sabotaging German armies until the end of the war.
Outgoing Finnish ambassador to Slovakia receives award
Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák awarded outgoing Finnish Ambassador to Slovakia Jukka Leino with a golden plaque for his efforts and active diplomatic participation in strengthening Slovak-Finnish relations, the TASR newswire reported on August 28.
Moody’s predicts an increase in car production in Slovakia
Slovakia’s economy will see a rise next year, with car production providing its most significant boost, according to the latest prognosis of the Moody’s rating agency. In addition to Slovakia, the report assessed the automobile industry and its effects on the economies of Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia, the Sme daily reported.
Slovak Paralympic athletes to compete in London
SLOVAKIA is to field 34 athletes at the 2012 Paralympic Games, which will take place in London between August 29 and September 9. The country’s Paralympic squad consists of 30 physically challenged athletes, three visually disabled athletes and one guide, who will compete in nine events out of a total of 20 presented in London. The athletes left Bratislava with the aim of continuing the successful performance of their predecessors. Since the launch of the independent Slovak Republic, Slovaks have won 79 medals at Paralympic Games to date. Most of the athletes arrived in London on August 24, the SITA newswire reported.
Confidence in Slovak industry improves in August, economic sentiment hits record low
Sentiment in Slovak industry improved in August following a drop in July. The Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on Tuesday, August 28, that the confidence indicator surged 2 percentage points to negative 4.7 points in the eighth month of 2012. The statistics authority sees the growth in demand for industrial products and the expected production increase in the following months as the main reasons for the improvement.

Košice Airport plans to up the number of direct flights linking Košice with the capital Bratislava and to set prices so as to make the flights more accessible to business clientele as well as the general public.

Polish bus runs over Slovak woman in Serbia
A Slovak woman lost her life on Saturday, August 25, on a Serbian highway after being struck by a Polish bus. According to Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Boris Gandel, the incident took place close to Subotica near the Serbian-Hungarian border.

Teachers' unions planning one-day strike on September 13
Exactly one year after teachers picketed outside Government Offices, workers in the education sector are slated to hold a one-day strike that is expected to keep teachers and other staff away from schools on September 13, the TASR newswire learned on Monday, August 27. Speaking at a press conference on the same day, the head of the sector's trade unions, Pavel Ondek, announced that the strike is expected to run between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The Defence Ministry has apologised to Gučík
Former head of the private TA3 news channel Michal Gučík will ask for €750,000 in financial compensation even though he received an official apology from current Defence Minister Martin Glváč. Yet, Gučík, who was, along with other three journalists, wiretapped by the former management of the Military Defence Intelligence (VOS) last year, claims that he will not keep the money if the courts rule in his favour, the SITA newswire wrote on August 24.
The Constitutional Court dismisses Trnka’s complaint
The senate of the Constitutional Court dismissed a complaint submitted by former prosecutor general Dobroslav Trnka at a closed session held on Thursday, August 23. The judges ruled that the complaint was unfounded and filed by an unauthorised person, the SITA newswire reported.

Belizean authorities revoke Mello’s residency
The Belizean Immigration Ministry has reportedly annulled the residence permit for Karol Mello, a Slovak fugitive who faces at least two charges for organising murders back in 2003 and 2004. The ministry claims that he received it under false pretences, the Belizean website Reporter.bz wrote on August 24.
Brits devoted to bat preservation come to Slovakia
The diversity of bat species in Slovakia attracts tourists from Great Britain every year, including professionals devoted to bat protection. Some tours through mining entrances and church attics have already started in Revúca, Banská Bystrica Region, the TASR newswire reported.
