Brussels criticises Slovak Telekom and its parent company
The European Commission has announced that it has sent objections to Slovak Telekom, as well as its parent company Deutsche Telekom AG, pertaining to their actions towards several wholesale broadband markets in Slovakia, the TASR newswire reported.
Dispute over funding for Slovak cultural centre in Hungary close to resolution
A dispute surrounding the funding of the so-called Slovak House in the Hungarian village of Mlynky (Pilisszentkereszt in Hungarian) might soon be resolved, with the deputy state secretary of Hungary’s Public Administration and Justice Ministry, Csaba Latorcsai, expected to sign a treaty on funding the ethnic-Slovak institution later this week, the TASR newswire reported.
Gašparovič responds to the cancellation of Yalta summit
President Ivan Gašparovič hopes that Ukraine will be able to resolve issues that have led to the cancellation of a summit of presidents of central and eastern European countries that was to have taken place in the Black Sea port of Yalta on May 11-12, presidential spokesperson Marek Trubač said, as reported by the TASR newswire.
Sme reports that Kaliňák intends to appoint Gašpar as police chief
Tibor Gašpar, who was recently appointed head of the police force’s Office for the Fight against Corruption, will probably replace Jaroslav Spišiak as national police president, the Sme daily has reported. Originally, the post seemed likely to be filled by former police vice-president Stanislav Jankovič, despite allegations that he had been involved in the cover-up of a speeding offence involving businessman Ján Božík.

During the rest of the year, Bojnice is a charming fairytale castle, and is Slovakia’s most visited tourist attraction, but annually it becomes the venue for an International Festival of Ghosts and Spirits, with a specific theme. In previous years, the castle has experienced vampires, witches and the like. In 2011, a former occupant Anna Rosina Listiusová, also known as “The witch from Šintava”, returned inviting back all of the ghosts who had ever been to Bojnice before.

A PROTEST in front of the General Prosecutor’s Office in Bratislava, entitled Occupy GP, was launched on the morning of May 1 and is planned to last for the entire month, the TASR newswire reported.Activists say that since the fall of the totalitarian regime in 1989 the prosecutor’s office has done nothing to convict people in various scandals that have caused the state huge losses.
Ministry finds way to pay nurses
THE GOVERNMENT has found a temporary solution to the problem of how to deliver pay rises granted to health-care workers last year. During a congress of nurses and midwives held in Poprad on April 27, Health Minister Zuzana Zvolenská promised to resolve the current dispute by allocating €50 million from the state reserve.

Gašparovič will not boycott Yalta
PRESIDENT Ivan Gašparovič will travel to Ukraine for a summit of central and eastern European countries being held in Yalta despite the fact that several of his counterparts have already announced they will boycott the meeting over the jailing and alleged mistreatment of Ukraine’s former prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko.

TRANSPORT Minister Ján Počiatek stated that he will consider the possibility of allowing strategic investors to own some part of Cargo, the state-run rail freight carrier, as well as state-owned M. R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava, the TASR newswire reported. The first government of Prime Minister Robert Fico, in which Počiatek served as finance minister, ditched a plan to privatise the airport in 2006.

American turtles love Slovakia
TURTLES of the red-eared slider species (Trachemys scripta elegans) have been found living around Lake Baňa near Michalovce, east of Košice, even though this species is originally from the Americas. It seems that living in the area is quite conducive for the turtles and they are even able to spend winter in the wild there.
