Inflation continues to fall
The drop in the rate of the rise in consumer prices continued in April when annual inflation stood at 1.7 percent, down from 1.9 percent reported in March, and from 2.2 percent reported in February. During the first four months of the year inflation rose by about 2 percent, according to the data presented by the Statistics Office.
Čentéš will not submit complaint against Macejková
Jozef Čentéš will not submit a criminal complaint against Constitutional Court President Ivetta Macejková for allegedly manipulating his file at the court. According to him, it would not help to resolve the case, the Pravda daily reported on May 14.
Over 50 percent of Slovaks want euro, the survey shows
More than 50 percent of adult Slovaks would choose the common European currency over the former Slovak crown if they had the chance to do so, according to the survey carried our by NMS Market Research agency among 1,041 respondents between 18 and 59 years of age in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, between March 18 and 22, the TASR newswire reported on March 13.
President will never appoint Čentéš for GP
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič will under no circumstances appoint general-prosecutor-elect Jozef Čentéš for the position, president's spokesperson Marek Trubač told the SITA newswire.
Shoemaker Galand to lay off 300 people
More than 300 people employed at shoemaker Galand in the east of Slovakia will be laid off in May and June, the TASR newswire learned on Monday, May 13. The mass redundancies will take place at Galand's factories in Snina and Bardejov (both in Prešov Region), and the exact number of affected employees will reach 316, most of them women.
Many employment agencies skirt fair-play rules
There are more than 1,000 employment agencies in Slovakia employing a total of 30,000 people, but many of them do not observe the rules of fair-play vis-a-vis employees and the state, the TASR newswire learned at a round-table discussion organised by the Association of Personnel Agencies in Slovakia (APAS) on Monday, May 13.
NGO accuses Supreme Court of legitimising Roma humiliation
According to the Helsinki Committee for Human Rights in Slovakia, the Supreme Court has justified hate and degrading speech against the Roma minority, thereby legitimising the view that Roma are inferior and that their dignity is of less importance than other citizens of this country.
Čentéš might submit criminal complaint against Macejková
General prosecutor-elect Jozef Čentéš is considering whether to file a criminal complaint against Constitutional Court President Ivetta Macejková for her alleged interference in the independence of the court. Čentéš was prompted by a leaked e-mail that Macejková received from one of the judges on the court, in which he refused her decision that he will decide over Čentéš’ objection to the decision of President Ivan Gašparovič not to appoint him to the top prosecutor post, the Sme daily reported on May 11.
Fico did not attend session over Office of the General Prosecutor
Prime Minister Robert Fico, as well as all Smer MPs, did not attend the special session of the parliamentary committee for defence and security, at which he was to inform about the current state at the Office of the General Prosecutor. The opposition members of the committee, who initiated the meeting, called it a sign of cowardice, the SITA newswire reported on May 13.
HN: Brussels investigates fraud with photovoltaic power plant
Brussels-based European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) is investigating the dubious competition over the construction of the Malá Domaša photovoltaic power plant in eastern Slovakia. Due to the dubious practices surrounding the construction of the facility, it is possible that Slovakia will have to return €1.2 million which it received through EU structural funds, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported on May 13.
Slota faces DUI charges
Former leader of the Slovak National Party (SNS) Slota has been charged with driving under the influence of an addictive substance. Since he refused to undergo a breathalyser and blood tests, he was automatically considered to be drunk. Yet, he was released from custody only a few hours after his detention. Moreover, thanks to the district prosecutor he might also avoid a super-fact-tracked hearing, which in similar cases lasts less than 48 hours, the Sme daily reported on May 11.
One bank failed stress test
If the economy were to experience a steep drop, only one Slovak bank would have difficulty covering its losses, according to the results of stress tests carried out by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the country’s central bank. Yet, the NBS will not disclose which bank is at risk, the Sme daily reported on May 11.
Bratislava tunnel has reopened
THE TRAMS that run under Bratislava Castle are running again. The tunnel was closed in February 2012 due to unsafe conditions.
Abducted Italian found in Slovakia
SLOVAK police located an Italian national who was allegedly abducted by four men and taken to Slovakia. Two of the men could face 25 years to life imprisonment if convicted of abduction, while the other two could face up to 12 years in prison, the TASR newswire reported.
Turzo festivities open Žilina Region’s tourist season
TURZO FESTIVITIES at Slovakia’s most-visited castle, Orava Castle, kicked off the summer tourist season in the Žilina Region toward the end of April. Soon afterwards, several other tourist destinations opened their doors for the season, the TASR newswire wrote.
More workers in Slovakia's IT valley

While more experience, on the one hand, is feeding the increased interest in outsourcing, the current difficult economic situation has made companies more cautious when signing new IT outsourcing contracts.
Decades of 'little reminders'
SLOVAKS have been incredibly creative in softening the edges of the word ‘corruption’ and have developed a colourful tapestry of expressions to use instead of the word ‘bribe’. Most Slovaks who have, at one time or another, paid a bribe would say they only gave a ‘malá pozornosť’ which might translate to something like a ‘little reminder’ or a ‘small consideration’. The ‘reminder’ of course might be as ‘little’ as €10,000, discreetly slipped into the right pocket. Some still recite the communist-era proverb that if you do not steal from the state you are stealing from your family, and continue greasing the palms of those who control the flow of public funds.
