Archbishop Sokol fails in libel suit against Týždeň weekly
Retired archbishop Ján Sokol has lost a legal case he brought against the Týždeň weekly. Týždeň will not apologise to him, as he had requested, nor pay him the compensation he had been seeking, the Sme daily reported on May 16.
Government discusses proposed growth measures
The government discussed the Economic Policy Measures to Support Economic Growth document with its partners – i.e. employers and unions – in the Solidarity and Development Council on May 15. The envisioned measures are supposed to boost employment in the most undeveloped regions of Slovakia, provide employment support for young people, streamline public administration, support expert education and improve the quality of infrastructure.
Sme: Bar Association to ask Macejka about Čentéš letter
Lawyer Ľubomír Macejka, the husband of Constitutional Court chairperson Ivetta Macejková, will have to explain to the Slovak Bar Association (SAK) why he sent an insult-filled letter to general-prosecutor-elect Jozef Čentéš in March. The letter was made public this week; according to SAK statutes, an advocate should not vilify other members of the legal profession.
GDP rose by 0.6 percent year-on-year in first quarter
Slovakia's GDP in fixed prices rose by 0.6 percent on a year-on-year basis in the first quarter of 2013, according to the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) flash estimate released on May 15.
Fitch confirms Slovakia’s A+ rating
International rating agency Fitch Ratings has confirmed the rating of Slovakia’s long-term liabilities in both domestic and foreign currency at A+ and its short-term liabilities at F1, with a stable outlook.
Slovaks detained for human trafficking in Bulgaria released by police
Two Slovaks who were detained by Bulgarian police on May 13 on suspicion of complicity in people-trafficking have been released, Slovak Foreign Ministry spokesman Boris Gandel said on May 15, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
€49 million collected in road tolls in Slovakia in January-April
Road tolls collected in Slovakia in the first four months of this year totalled €48.85 million, up by about 1.1 percent, or about €550,000, from the same period last year. In April alone, road tolls raised €13.45 million, an 8.1-percent or €1-million rise on the same month in 2012, said Anton Bódis, a spokesperson for toll company SkyToll, as reported by the SITA newswire on May 15.

THE LIST of famous people killed in a duel (súboj) came close to lengthening recently. Pushkin would have been joined by an unlikely companion – Jozef Čentéš. Much has been written here about the election and appointment of the general prosecutor. But the madness has really reached new heights. It now turns out that Ľubomír Macejka, the husband of Constitutional Court President Ivetta Macejková, wrote Čentéš an angry letter:“I regret that we do not live in a time when I could challenge you to a duel. I would give you the choice of weapons.” “I wish that not only prosecutors, but also people who have thus far known nothing of you, expel you from their company, as someone humanly unacceptable.”
Pezinok dump opponents win case
THE FIGHT by citizens of a small Slovak town to close a waste dump developed close to their homes, which has now dragged on for more than 10 years, might finally have a happy ending for anti-dump activists. The campaigners from Pezinok, near Bratislava, say that a recent Supreme Court decision means the site’s owner no longer has a valid permit to use it as a landfill. They also say that the case has a wider societal significance, since it means that the public must now have access to urban planning decisions that affect the establishment of sites with significant environmental effects.

The Bratislava Regional Court has confirmed the validity of objections made by Greenpeace against the Nuclear Supervision Office's (ÚJD) handling of its evaluation of the Mochovce nuclear power plant, Andrea Zlatňanská of Greenpeace Slovensko said on Tuesday, May 14.
Employment in Slovakia dropped 1 percent in Q1 in annual comparison
Over 2.19 million people were employed in Slovakia in the first quarter of this year, according to a flash estimate of the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ). Compared with the same period in 2012, this represents a 1-percent decrease, the TASR newswire reported, quoting the ŠÚ. After a seasonal adjustment, employment decreased in comparison with the first quarter of 2012 by 0.9 percent, and compared with the fourth quarter of 2012 by 0.3 percent.
Survey: Job loss is biggest fear among Slovaks
As many as 58 percent of Slovaks are afraid of losing their jobs, according to the results of a survey published by the GfK agency on Tuesday, May 14.The second most common fear concerns health (52 percent), followed by the fear of winding up in desperate financial straits.
People's Platform to propose Maroš Žilinka as NKÚ head if vote is open
Maroš Žilinka, who served as Interior Ministry state secretary in the previous electoral term (2010-12), will become the candidate of the People's Platform (including the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and Most-Híd) to head the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ), the TASR newswire reported, citing Most-Híd caucus leader László Solymos on Tuesday, May 14. The platform will only propose Žilinka as a candidate if the election of the NKÚ head in parliament is open (i.e. recorded) instead of a secret ballot, Solymos added.
Speaker of parliament scraps SaS caucus
The parliamentary caucus of Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), which after the departure of five members now has only six MPs, can no longer function and thus will be scrapped, Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška announced on Tuesday, May 14. SaS thereby loses not only its caucus, but also its spots on individual committees; these will be taken by members of other caucuses.
Supreme Court supports Pezinok inhabitants in case of local waste dump
In the protracted case of the waste dump located near the centre of their town, residents of Pezinok, near Bratislava, won a decision at the Supreme Court on May 14. The court upheld a previous verdict by the Regional Court in Bratislava which scrapped the decision of the environmental inspectorate to issue a licence to use the waste dump.
Core inflation at 1.8 percent, net inflation at 1.2 percent in April
Inflation in Slovakia reached 1.7 percent year-on-year in April 2013, with core inflation standing at 1.8 percent and net inflation at 1.2 percent, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on Tuesday, May 14.
TÚ does not want to force any operator out of the market
Slovak Telecommunication Office (TÚ) has neither submitted a document over the prepared electronic auction for public discussion, nor has it published the conditions of the competition over new licenses for a new fourth generation mobile network, which is ideal for high-speed internet, spokesperson for the institution Roman Vavro told the TASR newswire. His comments were made in response to an article published in the May 14 issue of the Sme daily, which reported that the TÚ allegedly wants to give the advantage to foreign companies hoping to lure a new operator.
Environment Ministry plans to abolish Recycling Fund
The abolishment of the Recycling Fund, the prevention of waste disposal facilities from purchasing scrap metal from individuals and an end to depositing plastics, glass, paper and metals into landfills, are some of the measures included in an amendment to the law on waste. According to Environment Minister Peter Žiga, the changes should help Slovakia adopt modern European waste management legislation. If passed in parliament, the new rules will come into effect as of July 2014.
