However, his plan failed and he now faces fraud charges, the SITA newswire wrote in early April.
Slovak National Gallery plans to continue overhaul
THE SLOVAK National Gallery had a busy and productive year in 2012. EC criticises Slovakia for old-age benefits
EVERY senior living in Slovakia whose pension does not exceed 60 percent of the average monthly wage is entitled to a special old-age benefit, according to a law passed in 2006. Yet pensioners who move to another state of the European Union or the European Economic Area lose their eligibility for the benefit, the so-called Christmas allowance, regardless of how many years they have worked in Slovakia. Because of such practices the European Commission has referred Slovakia to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), saying that it is breaching “its obligations under EU law on social security coordination”.

Blood and guts in ancient drama
FACED with the dilemma of what to do with a bus full of theatre theoreticians, reviewers, journalists, artists and dramatic advisers, touring Europe in search of great drama and due to visit Bratislava, the Slovak National Theatre (SND) decided to push the boat out and stage a work of classical Greek theatre, the tragedy Oresteia, with English subtitles.

Insurers report higher corporate interest
FIRE, flood or IT failure may bring down, or at least cause significant problems to, an otherwise financially healthy company. Thus insurance companies believe that even the current economic crisis should not be a reason for entrepreneurs to leave their business uninsured. Insurance companies in Slovakia report increased interest in insurance of assets, but say liability insurance is growing too.

Gender equality rules force insurance changes
WHILE MANY agree that gender equality is a laudable goal, particularly in the workplace, many insurance companies believe that, when calculating the prices of their policies and benefits payouts, not taking gender into consideration goes against basic insurance maths and undermines the underlying principles of the sector. Nevertheless, insurers in Slovakia have bowed to pressure from Brussels, and have re-designed their insurance products to be unisex. Some of them even used this opportunity to make their products more attractive.

Thus the number of uninsured vehicles accounted for 7.2 percent of all registered vehicles. In the previous year 171,000 vehicles were without liability insurance, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovak capital hosts world wine contest
SLOVAKIA is not particularly well known abroad for its wine production, but this is mainly because most of it is consumed locally. Quality has been improving in recent years, and Slovak wines achieved remarkable results at the Viniales Internationales Paris 2013 competition: with nine gold and 38 silver medals, they outperformed even those of France. In mid May Slovakia has an exceptional chance to further improve its image as a wine-producing country when its capital city, Bratislava, hosts the 20th Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) 2013, one of the world’s most prestigious international wine competitions.
