FOR MOST Slovaks aged 30 and up, Labour Day is still associated with compulsory attendance at pre-1989 events intended to glorify communist rule. Nowadays, most people prefer to devote themselves to leisure activities, detached from politics. It is a day when zoos and various tourist sites around the country open for the main summer season. Despite that, many organisations and individuals still use May 1 to further their political aims.

Head of ROA dismissed from NOVA party

Daniel Lipšic, leader of the New Majority (NOVA) party, says he has dismissed Ján Feranc, one of the owners of the Regional Procurement Agency (ROA), as a party member. ROA was granted the right by the Interior Ministry to handle procurement on behalf of the ministry and more than 20 other state organisations, but was subsequently criticised in the media when the deal became public. He became a member of NOVA only a few days before the media reports emerged, the Etrend.sk website wrote on April 30.

People’s Platform vows to challenge proposed Constitutional Court changes

The opposition parties united in the People’s Platform say that if parliament passes the government’s proposed amendment to the Act on the Organisation of the Constitutional Court, they will challenge it in court. Representatives of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and Most-Híd, say they are also ready to collect the necessary signatures during the ongoing parliamentary session, the TASR newswire reported on April 30.
