Monika returned from Copenhagen because she did not feel as useful abroad as she did in Slovakia. Marek runs a laboratory at the Slovak University of Technology (STU), which he uses to help develop the faculty to which he belongs.
What follows are the reflections and perspectives of five Slovaks who have chosen to remain in their country. They speak about the concerns they have regarding the current social climate, but also what brings them joy.
The respondents were approached both online and on the streets of Bratislava. Finding young people who are clearly committed to staying in Slovakia was not easy.
I returned for a better life
Currently working for a coffee roastery, 32-year-old Monika has been involved in gastronomy all her life.
She spent time in Malta, Copenhagen and Iceland, but has always felt a strong pull towards Slovakia. “For a long time, I thought I’d settle abroad. I discovered that I don’t feel as fulfilled or useful elsewhere as I do at home,” says Monika.
It was not easy for her to integrate abroad, which is why she understands Slovaks who return home with fresh inspiration and the desire to start something new.
“Many people are surprised by Slovaks who come back. But you have to realise that life abroad isn’t always a bed of roses,” she explains.
