Fico: Smer wants a new vote for general prosecutor in autumn
The ruling Smer party is losing patience with the opposition-sponsored schemes vis-à-vis the post of general prosecutor and cannot rule out that it will soon have a new vote held in parliament, Prime Minister Robert Fico said at the political talk show Sobotné Dialógy broadcast by public-service Slovak Radio (SRo) on May 25.
Tichý revokes Kozolka’s access to classified files
The acting general prosecutor has taken away all classified files from prosecutor Jaroslav Kozolka, who is facing allegations of collaboration with the counter-intelligence service under the communist regime, the TASR newswire reported on May 24.
EPH definitely buys SSE
Czech company Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH) will definitely own a minority stake in the Stredoslovenská Energetika (SSE) company. The previous owner, Electricité de France, signed the agreement with EPH on May 24 in which they agreed on the sale for €400 million.
Harabin’s deputy finally elected
THE JUDICIAL Council has elected Jarmila Urbancová to serve as the deputy chairperson of the Supreme Court. She won 14 out of 17 votes among council members present at a session on May 21, the Sme daily reported.
EU restricts pesticides to help bees
WHILE over the past 10 to 15 years beekeepers have been reporting an alarming reduction in the number of bees and bee colonies, no single cause for the declining bee numbers has been identified, according to the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) website. In its effort to reverse the trend, an appeal committee of the European Commission voted on April 29 to place a two-year moratorium on three types of pesticides that are believed to cause harm to bees.
Young Slovaks are self-confident
SLOVAK university students and graduates think they have a lot to offer to prospective employers, according to the First Steps into the Labour Market survey, carried out among students across central Europe by accountancy firm Deloitte. It polled students and graduates, most of them studying business, in 11 countries. The Pravda daily reported that usually, it is people in their thirties who have high self-esteem concerning their professional skills.
Slovak women of the year 2013
ELIŠKA Kubíková, vice-dean of the Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava, has been named Slovak Woman of the Year for 2013. The poll to decide the award was organised by the Slovenka women’s weekly. Kubíková accepted her award at a ceremony held at the Slovak National Theatre in Bratislava on May 21, along with an award in the category of health care.
Poorly prepared job applicants
THREE out of five job interviews in Slovakia fail due to insufficient preparation by applicants, and four out of five CVs are discarded by potential employers due to their disorganised structure or lack of information. People who have not yet held a regular job, such as school-leavers, tend not to appreciate the importance of good preparation, statistics from recruitment agency Adecco suggest.
More time for European funds
BRUSSELS may give Slovakia an additional year to draw from EU funds within the current 2007-2013 programming period. The European Commission proposed to extend Slovakia’s deadline by one year for spending a portion of EU funds that were originally supposed to be drawn by the end of 2013, the SITA newswire reported.

MORE than 120 Slovak institutions in more than 50 cities and towns took part in the ninth year of the Night of Museums and Galleries, which was part of the Europe-wide event, Nuit Europeénne des Museés, organised annually by the French Culture Ministry on the weekend that falls closest to May 18.
Tackling unemployment with EU funds
SLOVAKIA continues to suffer from high unemployment, with its biggest sore points being joblessness among young people and the long-term unemployment. To combat the problem, the government is considering using EU funds, including those which were originally allocated for other purposes.
Discussions highlight prejudices
EXCESSIVE bureaucracy concerning the legal status of foreigners who have relocated to Slovakia or the Czech Republic is often caused by prejudice, Pavel Čižinský, a Czech lawyer with the Advisory Service for Citizenship, Citizens’ and Human Rights NGO said in a discussion during the [fjúžn] festival. The discussion was called “And What Have You Done for Foreigners Today?”.

THE FINANCE Ministry has introduced a trial version of a system that is supposed to reduce the administrative burden of businesses. Through the Register of Final Accounts, companies will be able to publish their annual reports for free and in a single place, the TASR newswire reported.
Learning through one's taste buds
THEY say that love can arrive through the stomach and a group of foreign nationals living in Slovakia who participated in the events of [fjúžn] festival learned that there is some truth to these words. During Hedonistic Sunday, a festival event aimed at opening up participants to dishes from different cultures, the owner of the Ashoka Indian restaurant in Bratislava, Akshay Kumar Dixit, explained that food preferences can be an important factor when looking for a mate in his native India.

Pressing for gender quotas
ARE there enough women in managerial positions? Do they need a special approach? Is the introduction of quotas to boost women’s representation in company management structures necessary? However, the Slovak government does not like the idea of quotas and local HR experts are also critical.

THE PRESIDENT and the prime minister of Slovakia have recently made a couple of remarks which should unsettle anyone who had hoped that court decisions were immune to the will of politicians and that the era when the answer to questions like “how come” or “why” is just “because I said so” was behind us.
Fico: We will elect new prosecutor
CONSTITUTIONAL Court Justice Peter Brňák, who was earlier this year barred from ruling on a motion submitted by Jozef Čentéš, after Čentéš alleged that Brňák might potentially be biased against him, will nevertheless now decide on the fate of Slovakia’s general-prosecutor-elect.
