Plans announced to make tax returns simpler
The Slovak Finance Ministry is planning several changes to the Income Tax Act, which it says are intended to decrease the administrative burden on local businesspeople. One of the changes should be to simplify tax returns, which will also affect individual taxpayers, the TASR newswire wrote on Tuesday, May 28.
President asks Glváč to investigate alleged VSS embezzlement case
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič has shown an interest in the case of alleged embezzlement at the former Military Intelligence Service (VSS), asking for information from Defence Minister Martin Glváč.
More than two thirds of companies predict economic stagnation
More than two thirds of financial directors expect that the Slovak economy will fail to grow strongly this year, according to a survey carried out by accountancy firm Deloitte among financial directors in 13 countries of central and south-eastern Europe. Of 677 respondents about 7 percent were Slovaks, the TASR newswire reported on May 28.
Kozolka says he will sue Sme for libel
Prosecutor Jaroslav Kozolka, who was reported in mid May to have worked for the communist-era intelligence services, will turn to the National Security Authority (NBÚ) with a request to check his security clearance, saying he is even prepared to undergo a lie-detector test. Kozolka has also announced that he will submit a criminal complaint against the Sme daily for libel, based on reports about him which it has published, the SITA newswire reported on May 28.
Further witness testifies in VSS case
The case of alleged financial fraud at the former Military Intelligence Service (VSS) has produced another witness. Former military attaché in Turkey Ivan Macko reportedly informed current Defence Minister Martin Glváč about the dubious practices at VSS, saying that after he had done so he lost his job, the Sme daily reported on May 29.
State refuses to back new budget for Mochovce
The shareholders of the Slovenské Elektrárne (SE) have not approved the new budget for completion of construction of the Mochovce nuclear power plant (EMO) yet. The state’s representatives opposed the plan, the SITA newswire reported on May 28.
No election to NKÚ post as opposition withdraws its candidate
The Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) will still have to wait for a new chair after a fifth vote for this post, which should have taken place on May 28, failed. Since the ruling Smer party decided there would be a secret ballot, the opposition parties withdrew their candidate Maroš Žilinka, the SITA newswire reported.
Fedor hands file on alleged embezzlement at VSS to special prosecutor
On Monday, May 27 the head of the parliamentary committee to oversee the activities of the military intelligence (VS), Martin Fedor, handed the file that details alleged embezzlement at the former military intelligence service (VSS, now merged into the VS) to Special Prosecutor Dušan Kováčik. The daily Sme had earlier delivered this document to Fedor, and also to the Special Prosecutor’s Office (ÚŠP).
Charges against former Tax Directorate head dropped
The former head of the Tax Directorate, Miroslav Mikulčík, is no longer being prosecuted. Mikulčík had been under investigation for nearly two months in connection with the collapse of the tax system, the Sme daily wrote.
Andrej Kiska leaves Good Angel charity, intends to run for president
Co-founder and administration board chairman of Good Angel (Dobrý anjel) charity Andrej Kiska has terminated his affiliation with the organisation after seven years due to his ambition to run in the upcoming presidential elections. Kiska will be replaced in the post of administration board chair by his wife Martina Kisková.
Health Ministry seeks advisor to oversee transition into single insurer
Even a ruling by the European Court of Justice blocking €30 million from Slovakia’s account over the country’s ban on private health insurers’ profits has not prevented the government from continuing its efforts to push private health insurers out of the Slovak market.
New rules make starting limited liability companies more difficult
New rules for establishing a limited liability company will come into effect in October 2013, at which point they will be required to deposit at least €5,000 into the bank until the state office registers the new company. The government is proposing this change (created by the Justice Ministry) so that business partners will have a better chance of getting their money back from an indebted company.
Kia Motors Slovakia employees to see salary hike and bonuses
The base monthly salary for employees of Kia Motors Slovakia will rise by an average of 3.2 percent under the collective agreement signed by the company management and employee representatives on Monday, May 27.
Former anchorman Žitný released on parole after 13 months in prison
A Trenčín District Court judge ruled on Monday, May 27 that former TV Markíza anchorman Rastislav Žitný should be immediately released on parole, the TASR newswire reported. The court also ruled that Žitný, who was sentenced to two years in prison for killing a five-year-old boy in a traffic accident in Rohožník in June, 2008, will now face a one-year probationary period.
Pravda: Mitsubishi considers investment in Slovakia
Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi is considering the possibility of investing in Slovakia, the Pravda daily wrote in its Saturday issue. Head of the board of directors of Mitsubishi Corporation Yorihiko Kojima and a delegation of Japanese managers held talks with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and hisministers in Bratislava on Friday, May 24.
Fire at university in Bratislava affected food laboratories
The damage caused by the fire that broke out on the evening of Thursday, May 23 in a Slovak University of Technology (STU) laboratory in downtown Bratislava has been estimated at €300,000.
Glváč calls VSS tunnelling scandal a dangerous life-threatening hoax
The case of alleged tunnelling of the former Military Intelligence Service (VSS) is a dangerous media hoax that has been threatening the interests of the state, the functioning of military intelligence and the lives of its members, Defence Minister Martin Glváč told the press on May 24. According to him, the document that allegedly provides evidence of shady transfers of property is inauthentic, the TASR newswire reported.
NOVA and SaS renegades unite
The new party constituted on the right-wing political spectrum as former members of the opposition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, who departed in April this year, joined the New Majority (NOVA) party of Daniel Lipšic. The new party will now be called New Majority – Agreement, the TASR newswire reported on May 26.
Focus poll shows SaS outside parliament
If parliamentary elections had been held in the middle of May, Smer would have won with 40.8 percent of votes, according to the poll carried out by the Focus agency on a sample of 1,018 respondents between May 9 and 13. The poll shows that the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, which currently occupies six seats in parliament, would not gain enough votes to make it into parliament, the SITA newswire reported on May 27.
Vizár’s Pandas awarded in Cannes
The jury at the Cannes film festival awarded the Slovak animated film Pandas directed by Matúš Vizár. The movie placed third in the Cinéfondation section, the competition of short and medium-length films made by students, with an award of €7,500, the SITA newswire reported on May 24.
