A fishy smell from the VSS
WIRETAPPING of journalists by the military counter-intelligence agency, leaked secret documents hinting at large-scale embezzlement of public funds by officials in a counterpart intelligence agency, shredding files linked to suspicions of criminal activities, claims and counterclaims traded by the current and former minister of defence, a bullied girlfriend and intimidated journalists: these aren’t the plot points in a spy novel but bits of media reports on Slovakia’s military intelligence managers.
Multiplying effects of the car industry
WHILE Slovakia’s strong focus on its robust automotive industry has been criticised by some economic experts, automotive producers argue that car production does not mean only assembling cars from imported parts, but also production and exports by local subcontractors, research and development, and innovation. A recently-released study by experts from the University of Economics in Bratislava has confirmed the automotive industry’s importance for Slovakia.

India in the viewfinder of Slovak exporters
SLOVAKIA would like to reduce its export dependence on the European Union and focus more on areas outside the continent. Currently, about 85 percent of Slovakia’s exports end up in EU countries. The Slovak Economy Ministry is searching for new destinations for Slovak products, especially in Asia, countries of the Persian Gulf, Russia and the Balkans. India, with its population of over one billion and a growing middle class, is a particularly attractive export market for Slovakia.

Cyril and Methodius – some myths live on
WHEN travelling through Slovakia, one is bound to notice streets, churches, chapels, schools, as well as a university and a hospital, bearing the names of two brothers, Catholic saints Cyril and Methodius. Biggest challenge: lack of information
INDIA’S affluent middle class, which has already explored the world’s more traditional holiday spots, might be open to travelling to new destinations where there is a market opportunity, in countries like Slovakia, Rajiva Misra, the Indian ambassador to Slovakia, suggested. Misra’s homeland saw a number of maharajas coming to Piešťany in the 1930s, with the ambassador suggesting that if a good holiday package was offered to Indians, they would likely come to Bratislava for more than just a day trip from Vienna.
