Slovak economy proves resilient
Over the past year, the Slovak economy has demonstrated more resilience to unfavourable external developments than many of its neighbours. A major part of this improved performance can be associated with the lucky timing of euro adoption, which among others has reflected in improved competitiveness for Slovak exporters, as was first seen with the return to economic growth way back in 2010.

Investment and real estate highlights
JANUARY 2013– As many as 927,000 cars were produced in 2012, which was the highest number in the 21-year history of Slovakia. Despite analysts' murky prognoses, the three Slovak carmakers believe that the decline of the European auto market will not slow their production and that they will go on to produce in 2013 even more cars than in the record-breaking year 2012.
Still tentative, but reviving slowly
Though there is still post-crisis edginess on the Slovak real estate market, some segments already display encouraging signs. The market would be helped if there were more international developers to make things more transparent, said Andrew Thompson, the managing partner with Cushman & Wakefield. Miroslav Barnáš, managing director of Jones Lang Lasalle Slovakia says that in parallel with general economy recovery, since the beginning of 2013 investor appetite is on the rise. Meanwhile, Kamil Bado, the director of Gleeds, suggests that banks have understood they cannot sit on their money forever and are beginning to finance new projects.

ECONOMIC cooperation between the US and Slovakia, countries whose economies differ vastly in size, does not exactly result in a high volume of trade. Nevertheless, the presence of US investors in Slovakia remains visible, while the free trade agreement between the US and the European Union that is currently under negotiation is expected to boost bilateral economic relations.

New Labour Code offers no immediate relief for labour market
Slovakia’s labour market continues to suffer from the impact of the global economic downturn. The Labour Code, amended a year ago, did not push unemployment significantly up or down. Even with the unemployment rate oscillating around 14 percent, the cost of labour continues to grow. Slovakia’s Labour Code was most recently amended in October 2012, with most of the changes becoming effective as of January 2013. While the government was satisfied with its final version, calling the Labour Code “modern and balanced”, the opposition, as well as representatives of employers, heavily criticised the changes, saying that the new rules for the labour market would only increase the costs of labour and reduce Slovakia’s growth prospects.
