Ombudsman for children’s issues to be introduced soon
SLOVAKIA cannot turn a blind eye to child abuse, therefore it will launch for setting up the office of children’s ombudsman, Labour Ministry State Secretary Jozef Burian told the public-service Slovak Radio on January 25.
Second poll shows Kiska and Kňažko as potential rivals for Fico
PRIME Minister Robert Fico would win the first round of the presidential election with 38.8 percent of the vote, leaving the remaining 14 candidates far behind, according to an opinion poll conducted over the phone by the Median polling agency for the public-service RTVS.
Becoming a naturalized Slovak (video included)
Though they both formerly lived in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, ethnic Slovaks living in Serbia now have a different life, says Ivan Hansman, a 50-years-old director from Vojvodina, Serbia. Hansman left his country after the civil war in Yugoslavia started in 1991 saying “We had to fire on our friends or those friends had to fire on us. It was absurd.” Slovakia is his new home.
Voters need more ties to EU issues
WORK migration is not an immediate threat for Slovakia, unlike in countries of western Europe, where some voters and politicians perceive it that way. Thus, if radical and extremist forces get their say in the European Parliament (EP) elections, it will be due to the low voter turnout, for which Slovakia is notorious among EU member states. The Slovak Spectator discussed this and other EP-related issues with Vladimír Bilčík, a senior researcher with the Slovak Foreign Policy Association (SFPA) think tank.

Local art in Liptov
AFTER celebrating the anniversary of legendary Slovak bandit Juraj Jánošík last year, Liptov (where he was born and executed) wants to focus its attention this year on local artists. The region’s central city, Liptovský Mikuláš, will be the City of Art in 2014.
La Bohéme at the SND
GIACOMO Puccini’s La Bohéme is a classic opera featured on theatre programmes the world over. Bratislava will get its own new staging (it was first played here in 1922), this time directed by legendary Peter Konwitschny, from Germany, and conducted by the head of the Bratislava opera section, Friedrich Haider.
Kaliňák speaks out on Moldava raid
INTERIOR Minister Robert Kaliňák is responding to critics who allege human rights violations occurred as part of a June 2013 police raid on a Roma settlement near Moldava nad Bodvou in eastern Slovakia. In doing so he urged people to “let the police work” and alleged that inquiries into the case risk turning law enforcement officers “into bystanders” who are afraid to take action when it is needed.
Exploring a profitable IT marriage
RAJIVA Misra suggests that there is anecdotal evidence that Slovakia has made it onto the radar of a growing number of Indian tourists: “take a walk in the Old Town [in Bratislava] on the weekend in summer and you will see Indian tourists around”. However, the Indian ambassador to Slovakia adds that Slovakia’s challenge is to figure out how to keep the tourists here longer. With the growing fitness culture in India, Ambassador Misra sees a niche for Slovak entrepreneurs active in the sports-related business to explore opportunities in his homeland, where there is an emerging need for shared experience in the management of sports academies and coaching centres.
VW considers salary cuts
BRATISLAVA-based carmaker Volkswagen (VW) is allegedly planning to cut the salaries of its employees by 4 percent. The company has already submitted the proposal to trade unionists, explaining that it wants to invest in modernising its production lines so that it will reduce employee work hours, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote in its January 21 issue.
Slovaks explore Indian cuisine
ONE might not expect to find good or authentic Indian cuisine in Slovakia, yet there are several Indian restaurants around the country, most of which are (predictably) located in the biggest cities, as well as a specialised food store that sells Indian products.

EP elections: Biggest issue is low turnout
FOR THE founding members of the European Union plus others in the west of the continent, May 24’s European Parliamentary elections are set to be a struggle between the political mainstream and radical or even extremist movements. Slovakia’s issue is rather prosaic in comparison: will voter turnout again be the lowest among all member states?
Kotleba's term begins amid bickering
COOPERATION between the recently-elected regional council in Banská Bystrica Region and its new regional governor, far-right extremist Marian Kotleba, got off to a bumpy start.
Losing patience
WATCHDOGS, diplomats, the media, businesspeople, critical judges and a fairly large segment of Slovak society would agree that something has gone terribly wrong with Slovakia’s judiciary. They would also agree that things didn’t go wrong just yesterday, or even a year or two ago. Over the past decade international organisations, activists and people affected by decisions that Slovakia’s courts have made (or failed to make), have been showering the state of the judiciary with criticism.Nearly 70 percent of those polled last April in a survey prepared by the Focus polling agency for Via Iuris, a political ethics watchdog, suggested that they do not trust Slovakia’s courts, confirming what has been a long-term trend.
Topoľčany's town hall
A TOWN or city without a town hall would not have been a proper town, and a true town hall had to be situated in the most central location. Topoľčany’s town hall was no exception.

Dumped animals
THE SLOBODA Zvierat (Animal Freedom) organisation’s Bratislava shelter in Polianky accepted a record number of animals during the 2013 Christmas season. Between December 23 and January 20, the shelter received 70 animals (the hi-ghest number in its 20 year existence), only 11 of which had microchips and were able to be returned to their owners.
Potential remains underutilised
THE TRADE exchange between Slovakia and India is rather slim, despite being more significant in the past, when Slovakia was part of Czechoslovakia. Now, hopes are being pinned on the ongoing negotiations between the European Union and India over the Free Trade Agreement.
Slovak theatre in India
AFTER a recent successful presentation in New York within the V4 PACE – Performing Arts in Central Europe programme, Slovak theatre will be introduced to the Indian audience. Invited by the International Theatre Festival of Kerala, the Slovak Debris Company theatrical ensemble, in cooperation with the Slovakia’s Theatre Institute, will perform its latest piece, Epic, from January 27 to February 3, the institute informed in its press release.
