THE TITLE Village of the Year was bestowed on Malé Dvorníky, in the Dunajská Streda district, in mid November. The south-western Slovak village will proceed to the European round of the competition by the European Association for Rural Development and Village Renewal (ARGE).

Shooting the constitution

FILM CITY in Mumbai, established in 1977 and spread over 500 acres, is one of the largest studio complexes in India. But while Film City is better known for Bollywood style films, it is also the place where prominent Indian filmmaker Shyam Benegal shot a 10-part TV series, The Story of the Making of the Constitution of India – Samvidhaan. The series is scheduled to air later this year.

FOOTPRINTS left by the Jurassic ancestors of today’s birds are rare, but a Slovak scientist, Ján Schlögl from the Department of Geology and Palaeontology at the Comenius University, has found one near the village of Thaiat, Rajasthan. The expedition discovered an imprint of the foot of a small Jurassic theropod, which scientists believe to be the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and modern birds, the Sme daily reported on January 20.

SLOVAKIA’s acceptance of three members of the Uighur ethnic group who were previously incarcerated at the Guantanamo Bay US military base is an acknowledgement of Slovakia’s friendship with the US, Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák said on TV channel TA3’s political discussion show on January 19.

Payment terms will change

THE CONDITIONS for making domestic and foreign payments in Slovakia will unify with the rest of the European Union and another five European countries as of February, when the so-called SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is implemented. This means that everyone will be able to send and receive payments in euros in the selected areas.

Jobless rate dropped over 2013

SLOVAKIA’S jobless rate shrank by nearly one percentage point in 2013, dropping to a still high 13.5 percent in December. Observers ascribe the drop to a moderate revival of the economy, job-supporting programmes and cleaning the job seeker registry. Prime Minister Robert Fico, now running for president, joined Labour Minister Ján Richter in an attempt to capitalise on the news.

SLOVAKIA and Malta plan to boost cooperation in tourism and hiking, said Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič after meeting his Maltese counterpart, George Abela, on January 23. Malinová case might go to court

THE CASE of Hedviga Malinová, a Hungarian-speaking student who was allegedly beaten in Nitra in August 2006 after she was overheard speaking Hungarian, could go to court. According to her lawyer Roman Kvasnica, who has read the results of the investigation, the General Prosecutor’s Office is ready to submit a lawsuit, the Sme daily reported in its January 24 issue.

Vareha gets 11 years in prison

MIKULÁŠ Vareha, nicknamed the Lord of Zemplín, will spend 11 years in prison and pay a €100,000 fine after the senate of the Specialised Criminal Court in Banská Bystrica found him guilty of VAT and other forms of tax and insurance fraud. The court thus upheld the original verdict, which had been overturned by the Supreme Court in November 2013.
