FRONTEX director visits Slovak-Ukrainian border
SLOVAKIA has one of the European Union’s external borders – the most eastern border with Ukraine. Executive Director of the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders (FRONTEX) Ilkka Laitinen visited the Slovak-Ukrainian border on January 15 in order to see Slovakia’s progress in developing integrated management of the EU’s external borders.
Online petition backing ombudswoman gets more than 2,500 signatures
MORE THAN 2,500 people have voiced their support for Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová in an online petition launched by the Centre for Research into Ethnicity and Culture (CVEK) in the wake of a dispute between the ombudswoman and the government, with almost one-third of the signatories coming from Bratislava.
Payment terms in Slovakia to change
THE CONDITIONS for making domestic and foreign payments in Slovakia will unify with the rest of the European Union as of February, when the so-called SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is implemented, which will be launched throughout the entire EU and another five European countries. This means that everyone will be able to send and receive payments in euros in the selected areas.

THE FUNCTION of the Supreme Court president and the chair of the Judicial Council, currently held by the same person, should be separate, according to independent MP Lucia Žitňanská.

SE shareholders approve €85 million for EMO construction
THE STATE will allocate another €85 million for the construction of the third and fourth blocks of the nuclear power plant in Mochovce (EMO), based on an agreement between the shareholders of the owner of the plant, Slovenské Elektrárne (SE), the SITA newswire reported on January 21.
IVO: President hits all-time low in public trust poll
AS HE reaches the end of his second (and last) term, President Ivan Gašparovič has reached the nadir of public trust since he took office in 2004, according to a poll carried out by the Focus polling agency on behalf of the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) that was released on January 21.
Unemployment rate at 13.5 percent in December
UNEMPLOYMENT in December 2013 stood at 13.5 percent, staying put when compared to November 2013, while falling 0.94 percentage points year-on-year, Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Minister Ján Richter announced at a press conference on January 21.
Four new ambassadors present credentials
PRESIDENT Ivan Gašparovič received four new ambassadors to Slovakia from Qatar, New Zealand, Mongolia and Malaysia on January 20, the TASR newswire reported.
Government borrows more than €500 million
THE FINANCE Ministry’s Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) borrowed on the financial markets more than €500 million on January 21. In two auctions it offered to investors government bonds maturing in 2016 and 2018, the SITA newswire reported.

GERMAN entrepreneur Marko Weiss has unveiled his plan to introduce a regular flight connection between the airport in Sliač, in Banská Bystrica Region, and the German city of Dresden, the TASR newswire reported on January 17.
Hidden radars to monitor Slovak roads
AS OF next week, the police will start combating dangerous drivers on a large scale. The police are now equipped with 780 new intelligence cars to be used for this purpose and will receive hundreds of stationary radars, the Pravda daily reported.
NOVA not recommending any presidential candidates in first round
THE NOVA party will not offer any guidance to its supporters as for which candidate they should vote for the in first round of the presidential election. The countrywide council of the party made this decision on January 18 in Prešov.

"When I arrived here I was very very happily surprised," says Yves Rouche, a hotel consultant and golf club manager from South Africa, who came to Slovakia more than five years ago to live with his girlfriend. After studying in France and living all around the world he settled down in Košice. Slovakia was much more colorful and free than he initially thought it would be, he said. "Actually this country was very nice, beautiful women - certainly one of the highest concentrations of pretty ladies," he says.

Car production up - again
CARMAKERS in Slovakia set a new record in 2013 with their continued increase in production, despite falling short of producing one million cars. Industry experts see room for more growth, but since carmakers are nearing their maximum output capacity, only the arrival of a new company can significantly boost production.
