Lajčák talks future plans

FOREIGN Minister Miroslav Lajčák has served in diplomatic posts in Moscow, Tokyo and Belgrade. From 2007 to 2009 he was High Representative/EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, the position created by the Dayton Accords that ended the Bosnia War, which is meant to aid the country in its transition to a functioning democratic state. This is his second stint as foreign minister. He recently sat down to talk about developments in Slovak foreign policy and his plans for the future.

Eximbanka boosts export support

THE STATE-RUN Export-Import Bank of the Slovak Republic (Eximbanka) estimates it will support exports totalling €2.725 billion via its activities in 2014. Compared with 2013 this means an increase by €135 million or 5.2 percent. The Slovak parliament approved the bank’s budget on December 4, the SITA newswire reported.

Ministry prepares six-year strategy

THE ECONOMY Ministry has prepared a draft Strategy of External Economic Relations of the Slovak Republic for 2014-2020. The Council of the Slovak Cabinet to Support Exports and Investment discussed the draft in November, and the cabinet is expected to deal with it later in February, Economy Ministry officials told The Slovak Spectator.

Most car production goes abroad

THREE carmakers in Slovakia, Volkswagen Slovakia, PSA Peugeot Citroen and Kia Motors Slovakia, export as much as 98 percent of their production, Jaroslav Holeček, the president of the Slovak Automotive Industry Association (ZAP), told the TASR newswire in early January when Slovakia marked the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the euro.

Slim chance deficit below 3 percent

THE FINANCE Ministry might enter the dividends from the state’s shares in the Slovenský Plynárnenský Priemysel (SPP) gas utility into the books for 2013, contrary to the state budget for 2014, which factors the dividends into this year. This will lower the government’s chances of keeping the deficit under 3 percent, which is one of its main priorities, the Sme daily wrote on February 3.
