Fico to face no-confidence vote on February 13
Prime Minister Robert Fico will for a second time face a no-confidence vote in parliament on February 13. Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška convened an extraordinary parliamentary session based on a motion submitted by three opposition parties: the Christian-Democratic Movement-KDH, Most-Híd and Slovak Democratic and Christian Union-SDKÚ, the SITA newswire wrote.
Žilina couple charged in forced prostitution case
THE POLICE have detained 40-year-old Jana S. and 42-year-old Michal K. who forced five women in Žilina into prostitution. They were charged with pimping and now face up to five years in prison, the SITA newswire reported on February 10.
Construction sector reports best result in five years
THE CONSTRUCTION sector has reported one of its best economic results in the past five years, with production growing by 10.1 percent year-on-year in December 2013 to €464.6 million. For the whole year, however, production in the sector worsened by 5.3 percent compared to 2012, to €4.624 billion, according to the data provided by the Statistics Office.
Construction of D1 stretch near Ružomberok begins
THE CONSTRUCTION of a stretch of the D1 cross-country highway near Ružomberok, in Žilina Region, has started with Transport Minister Ján Počiatek ceremonially laying the foundation stone on February 11.
Another poll shows Kiska facing Fico in run-off
PHILANTHROPIST Andrej Kiska would be the only presidential candidate to have the chance to defeat Robert Fico in the second round run-off of the presidential election, a recent poll carried out by the Focus polling agency on 1,051 respondents showed.
Parliament dismisses amendment to State Citizenship Act
PEOPLE will continue to lose their Slovak citizenship if they are granted the citizenship of another country, as parliament has dismissed the amendment to the State Citizenship Act proposed by Peter Osuský of the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, the SITA newswire reported on February 11.
Slovak industry saw double-digit growth rate in December
INDUSTRY in Slovakia in December 2013 again grew at a double-digit rate. The data of the Statistics Office show that industrial production in the last month of 2013, excluding the impact of working days, achieved growth of 12.2 percent year-on-year, slowing from 12.6 percent in November. This was only the second double-digit growth rate of the Slovak industry over the past year and one of the highest monthly growth rates in recent years, the SITA newswire reported.
Only 1 in 5 Slovaks happy with developments since 2012 election
A TOTAL of 20.5 percent of respondents in a recent survey voiced their satisfaction with developments since the latest general election in March 2012, according to a survey by MVK agency out on February 10, as reported by the TASR newswire.

Nitra prosecutors reject top prosecutor’s criticism
THE NITRA district prosecutor’s office disagrees with General Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár’s criticism of two Nitra district prosecutors who handled the case of a brutal attack on the owner and patrons of the Mariatchi bar in downtown Nitra, which occurred in 2013, but was not reported by local media until January 2014.
Hauliers on strike alert
THE SLOVAK Road Hauliers Association (UNAS), currently on strike alert, convened a meeting of Nitra region road hauliers in Nitra on Sunday to inform them about UNAS demands concerning new legislation on road transport, which has been in effect since January, the TASR newswire reported on February 9.
Kuzmina wins gold
SLOVAKIA won its first gold medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics on the second day of the games. Biathlete Anastazia Kuzmina, of Russian origin, is the first ever athlete to defend the Olympic gold in an individual biathlon competition. She also won the medal in 2010 in Vancouver.
Protection of marriage gains support among MPs
MORE than 40 MPs have signed the proposal to amend the constitution in order to protect marriage as a unique bond between a man and a woman.
Fico seeks change in selection process of Judicial Council head
THE PRESIDENT could have the final word in selecting the head of the Judicial Council. Prime Minister Robert Fico admitted, when speaking in parliament on February 6, that he is considering granting the president the power to select the Judicial Council chair from among two candidates proposed by the Judicial Council members, the Sme daily reported.

SME exports remain low
THOUGH small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) dominate Slovakia’s business sector, creating a considerable portion of the country’s GDP, their share of total exports remains low. SMEs say a lack of information and staff, as well as Slovakia’s worsening business environment, prevents them from taking advantage of export opportunities. The state is aware of the problem and has prepared the MISIA 14 project to help.
