Steel industry necessary
A STABLE economy and sustainable employment would be impossible without the steel industry, the Economy Ministry said in its action plan for a competitive and sustainable steel industry in Slovakia, submitted for interdepartmental review on March 19.
On the Antichrist, greenhorns and Fico
“IF THE ANTICHRIST entered the second round, the right-wing would support him,” said presidential candidate Robert Fico shortly after he learned that it is actually philanthropist Andrej Kiska who might prevent him from moving from the prime minister’s office to the presidential palace when the presidential election’s second round takes place on March 29. If the voters are to believe everything that Fico has said about Kiska since he reloaded his campaign, they might actually get the impression that Fico’s challenger really is the devil.
Personal data protection to change
PRIME MINISTER Robert Fico has made concessions to employers critical of the personal data protection law. At its March 19 session the government passed the amendment to the law, valid for only one year, which was criticised for, among other things, high fines and bureacracy. The amendment is to be discussed in a fast-tracked proceeding.
EIB supports Slovak forestry sector
THE EUROPEAN Investment Bank (EIB) is lending €120 million to finance projects contributing to forestation, improved forest protection and management, and the upgrading of agricultural infrastructure in rural Slovakia, the EIB wrote in its March 3 press release.
TIS queries use of EU funds
EU FUNDS intended for improving health and health-care infrastructure have gone to regions that need it the least, an analysis by Transparency International Slovensko (TIS) reveals. Moreover, a lack of public control and money going mostly to the same companies, has led TIS to question the effectiveness of these projects, which successfully applied for the funds.
Slovaks’ bank savings at €26 billion
NON-STATE deposits in Slovak banks increased by 3 percent to €26 billion over 2013. More than one half of the total volume of money deposited in banks by ordinary people was in term accounts, Prima Banka reported based on data provided by the National Bank of Slovakia, the TASR newswire wrote in February.
Anti-fascist protest takes place in Bratislava
A LARGE group of mostly young people gathered in central Bratislava on March 15 to protest against fascism, racism and xenophobia.
NBS ends SKK coin exchange
THE NATIONAL Bank of Slovakia (NBS) oversaw a total of 766 exchanges of former Slovak koruna coins on January 2, which was set as the deadline for the currency exchange carried out by the NBS, the TASR newswire reported in early January.
More Slovaks file for personal bankruptcy
THE NUMBER of Slovaks filing for personal bankruptcy set a new record in 2013 and is expected to rise even more this year, yet fewer people are taking advantage of this option than in neighbouring countries. Experts and market watchers say excessively demanding laws are behind the low numbers, but the Justice Ministry is working on changes to ease the personal bankruptcy rules.
Fico failed in 1st round, say analysts
VOTERS took the victory of Prime Minister Robert Fico in the first round for granted or they were confused about the prime minister running for president, political analysts speculated as Smer’s official presidential candidate outpaced rival Andrej Kiska by just a little more than 4 percent in balloting.

AFTER the short animated film Pandy (Pandas) by Slovak director Matúš Vizár garnered success at last year’s International Film Festival in Cannes, where it placed third in the student film competition, Cinéfondation, it may prove successful in another contest: the Viewster Online Film competition.

Head of district court fired
JUSTICE Minister Tomáš Borec sacked the chairman of the Bardejov District Court, Karol Krochta, due to the loss of his credibility. Krochta’s sister won a selection procedure to become a judge at the very court that he headed, while he is also alleged to have physically assaulted someone.

Slovakia rejects Crimea referendum
SLOVAKIA’S authorities have officially announced they do not recognise the results of the March 16 referendum in Crimea, in which most voters agreed to secede from Ukraine and join Russia, calling it illegal and illegitimate. A Slovak MEP of the ruling party, however, disagrees with this stance.According to Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič, countries cannot accept any decisions that are at odds with international law, the principles of the UN Charter, OSCE’s Helsinki Final Act and other international treaties.
Will Procházka make it big?
IT WAS well past midnight when Radoslav Procházka and his wife stepped in front of the cameras on election night, appearing rather tired and slightly disappointed. They missed the run-off by some 3 percent of the vote. But hardly anyone in Slovakia would deem his result a failure.
Voters abroad call for online ballot
UP TO 10,000 people have already signed a petition aimed at changing election rules which limit Slovaks living abroad from casting ballots on election day in Slovakia, with petitioners hoping an electronic voting system will increase voter turnout. The Interior Ministry claims internet-based voting would be too costly.
Lajčák meets Kerry to talk Ukraine
FOREIGN Minister Miroslav Lajčák met with US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington on March 20 to discuss the situation in Ukraine. Kerry also briefed his counterpart on US sanctions against Russia that were approved earlier that day.

ONE WEEK before the March 29 second round presidential run-off Prime Minister Robert Fico has launched a new series of allegations about his opponent, philanthropist and businessman Andrej Kiska, this time detailing fines issued on companies Kiska formerly led. Kiska replied with allegations of his own, saying Fico loyalists are offering bribes to Kiska-associates in an attempt to dig up dirt.
