New rules for public collections passed
AFTER more than 40 years the parliament passed new law on fund-raising collections which should come into force on July 1. The law was supported by 130 MPs, the Sme daily reported in its May 28 issue.
Methamphetamine top problem drug in Slovakia
HEROIN is no longer the most problematic drug in Slovakia. It has been recently replaced by methamphetamine, with the number of people treated for addiction to marijuana also on the rise, the latest annual report of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) issued on May 27 revealed.
Minority groups got subsidies of €4.25 million last year
TOGETHER €4.25 million was allocated for the cultural activities of national minorities living in Slovakia, according to the report on the status and rights of national minorities for 2013 acknowledged by the government on May 28.
NDS and construction consortium sign contract for Žilina bypass
THE CONSTRUCTION of a 4.25-kilometre stretch of the D3 motorway that would bypass around Žilina began on May 26 with the signing of a contract between the National Highway Company (NDS) and a consortium of EUROVIA SK, Hochtief CZ and SMS, NDS spokesman Marcel Jánošík told the TASR newswire. The bypass should be completed within 1,095 calendar days, he added.
Trade unions want to up minimum monthly wage to €400
THE TRADE Union Confederation (KOZ) is insisting on its proposal to increase the minimum wage to €400 per month, with its chairman Jozef Kollár claiming on May 27 that a person who works eight hours a day should not earn an amount that is below the poverty level.
Number of foreign tourists up by over 7 percent last year
MORE THAN 1.6 million foreign visitors stayed in accommodation facilities in Slovakia last year, which represents a rise of 7.3 percent in annual terms, representatives of the Slovak Association of Travel Agencies (SACKA) informed on May 27.
