TWO of the biggest US banks, J.P. Morgan and Citibank, will benefit from the sale of Slovakia’s stake in telecommunications firm Slovak Telekom. The government privatisation agency, the National Property Fund, has signed a contract with the banks for consultancy services, with commissions ranging from €10 million to €22 million.

DUŠAN Čaplovič is not new to governmental positions. The outgoing education minister served as the deputy prime minister for national minorities and human rights under the first government of Robert Fico, a post which was cancelled under Fico’s second tenure.
Bank Act revision bolsters NBS’ powers
PARLIAMENT passed a revision to the Bank Act, which should implement EU standards. The new rules, approved on July 3, grant greater regulatory powers to the National Bank of Slovakia.
Kiska rejects all but one Smer-nominated judge
ONLY one of the six candidates nominated in a Smer-dominated vote in April to serve on the Constitutional Court for the next 12 years has met expectations that President Andrej Kiska and his team of advisors set for the top court. Thus Kiska will appoint only Supreme Court judge Jana Baricová, nominated by former president of the Supreme Court Štefan Harabin, to the Constitutional Court, where three judges will wrap up their term on July 4.

AFTER a quarter of a century, representatives of three countries commemorated the fall of the infamous Iron Curtain that once divided the democratic world from the “dictatorship of the proletariat” regimes. Slovakia and Hungary belonged to the “totalitarian East”, while Austria represented the “democratic West”.
Barbarič pulled car marathon distance, making Slovak record
FAMOUS Slovak strongman Juraj Barbarič set a new Slovak record for pulling a car. In 14 hours and 10 minutes, he pulled a Peugeot Passenger car weighing more than 1,200 kilograms for a marathon distance of 42 kilometres.
Dual education scheme outlined
AFTER two years of discussions, the representatives of employers, trade unions, ministries and regions introduced their idea for dual education at schools, which calls for secondary school students to gain practical work experience in specific fields with companies that have signed an agreement with their school.
Third annual Hug Day sets new record
THE THIRD year of the annual Hug Day event, during which free hugs are offered to anyone as part of the Without Hate campaign, saw a record-breaking 79,150 hugs. The highest number of hugs was given in Rimavská Sobota, where 80 volunteers participated.
