More construction firms could be banned for alleged cartel
THE PUBLIC Procurement Office (ÚVO) is to decide on whether to ban more construction companies involved in a 2004 cartel agreement in the public tender for the D1 highway from future tenders. Firms Skanska and Inžinierske Stavby are among those which could join the companies from the cartel that are already banned from public procurement, Doprastav and Strabag, the Sme daily wrote on July 9.
Court scraps verdict ordering Fico to apologise to Radičová
PRIME Minister Robert Fico does not have to apologise to former prime minister Iveta Radičová in her libel lawsuit, the court ruled. The subpoena summoning him to the trial was not delivered correctly, and thus the verdict is not valid.
71 percent of Slovak population is online
IN SLOVAKIA today as much as 71 percent of the total population aged between 18 and 69 uses the internet. The average Slovak internet user spends eight and a half hours a month online, according to the Online Landscape Central Europe study of the Gemius trade advisory company.
Foreign Minister and President send condolences over dead Czech soldiers
FOREIGN Minister Miroslav Lajčák sent his condolences via telegram to his Czech counterpart Lubomír Zaorálek over the death of four Czech soldiers in Afghanistan on July 8.
Slovakia’s deficit definitely below 3 percent GDP in 2013
SLOVAKIA’s public administration deficit reached 2.77 percent of GDP in 2013 based on common European methodology, according to a proposal of the 2013 final state balance sheet that was acknowledged by Parliament on July 8.
Amendment on judges to come into effect without Kiska’s signature
PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska again declined to sign into law the bill on judges that introduces stricter conditions for judges as well as secret balloting concerning personnel issues at the Judicial Council.

Fico proposes constitutional protection of water
THE RULING Smer party will ban the export of water through a constitutional amendment, Prime Minister Robert Fico and Environment Minister Peter Žiga told the press on July 8. The only exception to the ban would be water sent to other countries for humanitarian aid.
Married Slovak couple forced disabled to beg; faces human trafficking charges
THE POLICE have detained a married couple from Dolné Krškany, Nitra Region, who forced six disabled people to beg for money in Germany. The 38-year-old man and his 37-year-old spouse now face seven to 10 years in prison for human trafficking.
FinMin proposes changes in motor vehicles tax
THE TAX on motor vehicles should decrease and unify, so that it equals the lowest currently set tax rate, according to a proposal introduced by the Finance Ministry. The aim of the change is to impose fairer rules for taxing motor vehicles in Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported on July 7.
VAT will stay at 20 percent
VALUE added tax will remain at 20 percent, even though the budget deficit dropped below 3 percent of GDP last year. This stems from an amending proposal to the VAT law submitted by Smer MPs Ladislav Kamenický and Jaroslav Demian, which parliament passed on July 8.
Fair-Play Alliance submits another motion in emissions case
THE FAIR-Play Alliance (AFP) ethics watchdog has filed another motion with the General Prosecutor’s Office, claiming that it is ignoring information from Swiss authorities about the murky 2008 sale of free carbon dioxide emission quotas in which Slovakia lost more than €47 million. Moreover, the AFP will submit a criminal complaint to the National Criminal Agency, the TASR newswire reported on July 8.
