THE CURRENT system of tax on motor vehicles is changing radically. While pleasing transport firms, the Bratislava local government perceives the new tax as an example of growing nationalisation of local self-administration.

Students leave for Czech universities
THE NUMBER of Slovak students leaving to the Czech Republic to pursue higher education has risen steeply in the past 10 years. An estimated 6.4 percent of students studying at Czech universities in 2013 were Slovak, nearly double the number from 2003, when it was 3.5 percent, according to the annual Academic Ranking and Rating Agency (ARRA) report.

THE BIGGEST brewery in Slovakia, Heineken Hurbanovo, has again opened its doors to all those interested in how beer is brewed. Thousands of people visited the plant in mid-September, while almost 2,000 enjoyed tours of the brewery led by its employees, the TASR newswire wrote.

Gang boss sentenced to 16 years
THE SUPREME Court has sentenced Piťovci gang head, Juraj Ondrejčák, to 16 years in prison for leading the criminal group. The gang, according to the Specialised Criminal Court, was involved in drug trafficking and collecting protection money and operated out of Bratislava’s Lamač district.
