296 people from 44 countries granted Slovak citizenship last year
SLOVAKIA’S authorities granted Slovak citizenship to 296 people from 44 countries last year altogether. The most came from Ukraine (70), Serbia (67) and the Czech Republic (24), the SITA newswire reported.

PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska accepted the resignation of Education Minister Peter Pellegrini who took the post only a few months ago. The president also appointed a new minister: the ministry’s current State Secretary Juraj Draxler, the TASR newswire reported on November 25.
Baťa’s heirs will turn to the Constitutional Court
THE DESCENDANTS of shoe manufacturer Jan Antonín Baťa, one of the wealthiest men in former Czechoslovakia, will file a complaint with the Constitutional Court. Deficit is to reach 2.29 percent of GDP
THE PUBLIC finance deficit is projected to reach 2.29 percent of GDP next year, instead of the initially predicted figure of 1.98 percent of GDP, according to amending proposals to the state budget draft for 2015 as okayed by parliament’s finance and budget committee on November 24, the TASR newswire reported.
Pavlis: gas supplies to V4 now more secure than in 2009

A COMPANY with unclear ownership called Paywell, which won a public tender for verifying payments with so-called fuel cards for road tolls, has secured incomes amounting to tens of millions of euros by collecting 6.15 percent of each payment, according to Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) vice-chair Pavol Zajac at a press conference on November 24, the TASR newswire reported.
Kotleba refused to accept money for two social care homes
BANSKÁ Bystrica Region Governor Marian Kotleba did not sign an agreement on training employees of two social care homes, claiming that it is too expensive and would be a waste of EU money. Kotleba however was working with the wrong numbers, according to the Labour Ministry, Sme daily reported on November 22.
Focus poll: Smer would win, most right-wing parties would stay out of parliament
IF parliamentary elections took place in the first half of November 2014, the ruling Smer party would win, with 34 percent of those polled choosing it, and it would thus get 73 chairs in parliament.
Supervisory boards in non-profit hospitals will be disbanded
CURRENT supervisory boards of hospitals operating as non-profit organisations with state nominees will be split up and it will be up to regional and local authorities as well as NGOs to nominate new board members, Prime Minister Robert Fico stated on public service RTVS’s discussion programme on November 22.
Two additional inmates from Guantanamo came to Slovakia
SLOVAKIA accepted another two inmates from the US military base at Guantanamo Bay on November 20, this time nationals of Tunisia and Yemen, increasing the total number of them to eight, the TASR newswire learnt from Interior Ministry spokesman Peter Lazarov on November 21.
Budget of Mochovce power plant completion to be increased
SHAREHOLDERS of electricity utility Slovenské elektrárne (SE) on November 21 approved increasing the budget for the completion of the third and the fourth reactor blocks at the Mochovce nuclear power plant from €3.8 billion to €4.63 billion. The company will take out a loan to cover the extra €830 million, the TASR newswire reported.
Ruling on Harabin overturned
THE SUPREME Court cancelled the verdict of the Bratislava Regional Court, based on which Štefan Harabin was to receive the financial compensation at €150,000 in damages in the so-called Sadiki case, the Sme daily reported in its November 20 issue.
