Retail chains unite
LARGE retail chains have clustered in a new trade association in Slovakia, the Slovak Alliance of Modern Commerce (SAMO). Its launching members are Billa, Kaufland, Lidl, Tesco and Metro. The aim of the alliance is to actively participate in the development of trade in Slovakia and simultaneously to be a platform for an expert discussion whose aim should be well-tuned and permanently sustainable relations of trade and production, a balanced regulatory framework and suitable protection of consumers, the SITA newswire wrote.
Household consumption propels economic growth
SLOVAKIA’s economy kept growing during the third quarter of 2014, driven especially by growing household consumption in spite of weaker monthly indicators in industry and construction. Nevertheless, the outlook for the end of the year is less optimistic, when analysts expect a slowdown of local economic growth due to the slowdown in the eurozone and the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

Oldest ferro-concrete bridge in CEE renewed
THE MUNICIPALITY of Krásno nad Kysucou in the Čadca district in northern Slovakia has a bridge which is the oldest ferro-concrete bridge in the whole of central Europe still operating today, dating back to the end of the 19th century.
Humenné back to WWI
THE TOWN of Humen-né in eastern Slovakia commemorated the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of World War I with a re-enactment of the battles from 100 years ago within the event Karpaty / Carpathians 1914/2014. The fights during that were intense in the Upper Zemplín town.

THE LIST of National Cultural Monuments in Slovakia was enhanced by one item in 2014: the calvary in Nitrianske pravno.
Low-wage workers to earn more
THE ROBERT Fico Cabinet has introduced a reform of payroll taxes of low-wage workers to increase their wages and reduce unemployment. The Slovak Cabinet approved the measure on November 20.
Food producers worry about sanctions’ effect
WHILE customers are enjoying low food prices and retail chains say Russian sanctions targeting EU produce are having little effect on their businesses, producers claim a glut of goods on the market are harming their bottom line.

“After a certain period of damping, which lasted from approximately 2010 until 2012, investors again renewed activities in the retail development,” Peter Pohanka, head of retail leasing at CBRE Slovensko, told The Slovak Spectator. “During the previous year there were announced or started constructions of several shopping centres and some of them have been already opened.”

Industrial market revives
The industrial real estate market in Slovakia is slowly recovering from recent years of economic troubles, while market watchers expect the ‘built-to-suit’ market to lead the way in the coming years. The automotive industry remains one of the driving forces of the industrial space market, while growing e-commerce is also adding momentum. Another trend sees increased technological demands for industrial premises and a push for energy efficiency.
Free trains bring queues at stations
TRAINS were fuller and stations busier on November 17. It was, of course, the end of the holiday weekend; but it also saw the launch of free train travel for students and pensioners.
Residential supply and demand balanced
The development of residential real estate is reflected by especially favourable credit conditions, but also better than pre-crisis layouts of new residencies when large apartments meant high prices. Residential real estate remains to be most expensive in the Slovak capital, Bratislava. One square metre of residential space costs €1,638 in Bratislava Region during the second quarter of 2014, Nitra Region was the cheapest with the price at €579 per square metre, based on the data of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS). Košice Region was the second most expensive with €924 per m2 followed by Trenčín Region at €819 per m2. Regions of Žilina, Banská Bystrica and Prešov registered prices between €748 and €797 per m2 and Trnava Region was at €626 per m2.

THE INTERNATIONAL Festival of Contemporary Dance Bratislava in Movement / Bratislava v pohybe offered an insight into where this genre is heading, and it seems that the prevailing feature is physical theatre and the fusion of different forms and genres that jointly create a homogenous whole that keeps surprising audiences.
Return to the Burning House screened in Bratislava
THE PREVIEW of the documentary film Return to the Burning House directed by Anna Grusková took place at the Mladosť Cinema in Bratislava on November 18. It tells the story of Haviva Reik (1914-1944), lesser-known heroine of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), member of the British intelligence service, activist and Zionist.
