Bratislava public transport bus caught flames, driver saved the day
Bratislava firefighters were despatched to the Apollo Bridge to put out a fire that erupted in the engine of the city’s public transport bus on December 16. The Operations Centre of the Bratislava Fire and Emergency Corps Directorate informed the TASR newswire that nine firefighters with two fire engines were called to action. The fire erupted in the rear section of Ikarus bus, Bratislava Public Transport spokesperson Adriana Volfová said.
Slovakia to aid Ukraine in energy and security reforms
THE VISEGRAD Group (V4) countries, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia, will provide aid to Ukraine, with each country targeting a specific sphere, Slovakia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák said during the visit of V4 representatives to Kiev on December 16.
President signs 2015 budget
COMPLETING the legislative process, President Andrej Kiska signed the 2015-17 state budget legislation on December 16, the TASR newswire reported.
Three suspected of enslaving Slovaks detained
THE BRITISH police detained three men during a raid on one of the factories in Rochdale, northwest England, during which they rescued 20 Slovaks who were working in terrible conditions. The men will probably be charged with human trafficking and enslaving people, the SITA newswire reported.
Doctor charged with taking bribe
THE POLICE charged Vladimír P., the head doctor of one of the departments at the Children’s Faculty Hospital and Policlinic (DFNsP) in the Bratislava borough of Kramáre for taking a bribe. He was arrested by the National Criminal Agency (NAKA) on December 15, the TASR newswire reported.
Health Ministry will search for hospital investor in 2015
DESPITE the original plan to a start competition to find investor for new modern hospital in Bratislava worth €250 million, the Health Ministry will launch the competition only in the beginning of 2015. This stems from the advance notification published in the public procurement bulletin on December 15.
President appointed the judge he once refused
PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska appointed seven new judges on December 16, including Judita Gabonaiová Hrenčuková, whom he refused in August for serious doubts in the selection process. The Judicial Council however did not share his opinion and decided at its October session to submit the proposal for her appointment again.
Ryanair will launch flights from Bratislava to Athens
IRISH low-cost airlines Ryanair will launch flights from Bratislava to Athens in its summer operation as of 2015. It will fly to the Greek capital three times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, the SITA newswire reported on December 16.
Korean investor may create 800 jobs in Žilina
A NEW plant of Korean company Sungwoo Hitech should be built in Žilina, with an investment worth more than €50 million set to create 300 jobs, while the figure should rise to as many as 800 jobs within five years, Žilina Mayor Igor Choma told the press on December 15.
Government will review the law on waste
THE GOVERNMENT will discuss the new draft law on waste at its December 17 session, the Sme daily reported. Environment Minister Peter Žiga first introduced the legislation in August, but after receiving a total of 2,665 comments, he sent it for review to the European Commission.
SDKÚ falls to 2.1 percent
A RECENT poll carried out by the Focus polling agency in early December showed that the popularity of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), once the leader of the centre-right parties, continues falling. It would win the support of only 2.1 percent of respondents and thus fail to make it to the parliament, the TASR newswire reported on December 16.

NATIONAL Crime Agency (NAKA) officials apprehended the head doctor of one of the departments at the Children’s Faculty Hospital and Policlinic (DFNsP) in the Bratislava borough of Kramáre at the moment he was receiving a bribe, according to news reports first broken by aktualne.sk news website.
New road bypass around Žiar nad Hronom opened
A NEW, almost 6-kilometre R2 expressway stretch has been opened for use in the area of Žiar nad Hronom in the Banská Bystrica region, the TASR newswire reported on December 15. The stretch, which forms a bypass around the town, is expected to divert traffic from the town centre and to make local transport smoother.
