Paying by card
Quality online shops use SSL encryption, which enables secure communication between merchant and bank. The URL address of a legitimate Slovak merchant will contain: https://nameofmerchant.sk (in the stage when paying).
Check that the merchant has an SSL certificate from a well-known authority, such as VeriSign or Thawte.
A certificate can be found in the form of an icon placed on the merchant's site. These authorities conduct background checks to ensure the identity of the merchant. If the identity of the merchant is unknown, your browser will give you a warning not to use the site.
Conditions of sale
Look for terms and conditions of sale. Generally, you are required to agree to the merchant's terms before you can proceed with the transaction. READ IT, as it might save you unpleasant surprises later on.
The law's on your side
E-commerce laws in Slovakia protects consumers by:
- Ensuring a 24-month minimum product guarantee*
- offering a 7-day cooling off period when goods can be returned without reason
- Providing recourse to the Trade Inspection agency if the merchant does not deliver as expected
*In order for online shoppers to take advantage of the 24-month guarantee, they must have a valid, dated invoice and confirmation of payment
Read the fine print
Always take notice of:
- Required payment method
- Detailed information about the goods
- conditions under which the contract can be terminated
- Method of returning the goods to the shop
- Merchant details (name of the merchant, address, address of electronic post, phone number, company registration number from the business register, tax identification number)
Word of mouth
Check the merchant's reputation by asking friends or conducting online research. Be wary of prices too good to be true. While everyone wants a good deal, prices should not be suspiciously low. That generally indicates fraud.
