THE STATE-RUN Eximbanka, which provides support for exports and imports by Slovak companies, will provide help to Slovak Shipyards Komárno in Nitra Region according to a government decision taken on March 21. Eximbanka, possibly with the help of commercial banks, is set to fund the construction of three ships at the shipyard this year and another three or four in 2013, the TASR newswire wrote.
The mayor of the town of Komárno, Anton Marek, drew attention last month to the plight of Slovak Shipyards, which has orders on its books but ran out of money to fund production after several banks, including Eximbanka, turned down its requests for a loan.
The shipyard on the Danube River currently employs 289 people, with another 200 to 250 external workers.
The company’s financial problems threatened to lead to dismissals at the company. The Komárno district currently has an unemployment rate of 19 percent.
