An official at the older of Slovakia's two nuclear plants, Jaslovské Bohunice, said that after the renovation of the V1 nuclear power station is concluded in mid-2000, it will meet all technical specifications to operate safely until 2015. "We are convinced of this, and we are also able to prove it from the technical point of view," said Štefan Schmidt, director of Jaslovské Bohunice, which is an affiliate of Slovak power producer Slovenské Elektrárne (SE).

Schmidt added that after the renovation, the nuclear power station will meet all European Union safety criteria for older types of reactors.

Schmidt reported that the plant had received an ISO 9001 quality assurance certificate, which confirmed that its operation was safe and consistent with EU standards. The audit was carried out by Det Norske Veritas, he said. "Getting the certificate creates space for us to provide services to our clients abroad," Schmidt said.
