Bratislava airport handled more passengers

The passengers on regular flights are up, but those using charter flights drop.

As many as 1.42 million passengers went through the gates of Bratislava airport during the first nine months of 2016, which is 13 percent more than last year.

The reason for such a good results is mostly the significant increase in the number of passengers using regular transport, said the airport’s head Ivan Trhlík, as reported by the TASR newswire.

Thanks to new routes to Moscow, Berlin, Skopje, Manchester and Corfu, as well as the increase in the frequency of existing flights, regular transport increased by 30 percent year-on-year in the first nine months of this year.

“On the other hand, taking into account the geo-political situation in the world, we have noticed a drop in irregular holiday charter flights in which the number of handled passengers has dropped by 16 percent since the beginning of the year,” Trhlík said, as quoted by TASR.

Moreover, the September numbers have been the best for the past few years. The airport handled 190,812 passengers altogether, which is the best result since 2008, according to the airport’s spokesperson Veronika Ševčíková.

As for cargo transport, it has increased by 6 percent y/y to 16,210 tonnes of cargo during the first nine months of 2016. Also the number of aircraft movements increased, by 4 percent y/y to 20,346 departures and arrivals, TASR wrote.
