THE NUMBER of visitors to Bratislava increased by 16.6 percent in 2011, to almost 785,000. The growth is being attributed principally to top sports and thematic events.
“The visit rate was certainly affected by the World Ice Hockey Championship and the world championship in white-water canoeing,” said Ľubomír Andrassy, spokesperson for the mayor of Bratislava, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
He said he believes that Slovak as well as foreign visitors also headed to Bratislava to attend thematic events like the annual coronation re-enactment and other cultural events.
May was one of the strongest months for tourism last year, with 78,377 visitors visiting the capital and spending 152,469 overnights. mainly thanks to the ice hockey championship.
