An inhabitant of Bratislava has to work for more than 30 days in order to earn the money for one square metre of a flat or house. However someone living in Nitra needs to work for only 15 days in order to earn enough for the same thing, the Sme daily reported on May 19.
The daily warns that the number of such days in work is likely to continue to increase gradually. Prices of flats are rising, reaching figures seen before the economic crisis.
Some politicians, brokers and builders are in favour of state intervention in order to speed up the construction of new flats and houses, thereby decreasing the pressure for price increases. Construction work could also be accelerated by the passing of a new construction law that has been in development for years, according Robert Reichbauer of the Slovak Real Estate Agency.
The new Cabinet keeps promising this new law, but it's questionable whether it will garner enough support to be passed. The current construction law has been in place since 1976 and has gone through a number of amendments since then.
