A reconstructed former luggage underpass and five new lifts on platforms 1-5 were put into operation at Bratislava’s main railway station on January 24.

“The access to the lifts is equipped with guide rails and Braille for visually impaired people,” said Michal Lukáč, spokesperson for the station’s operator Železnice Slovenskej Republiky (ŽSR), as quoted by the TASR newswire.

With these changes, the state-run railway company secured barrier-free access to the platforms and the greater comfort of disabled passengers, without the station’s employees having to accompany these people.

Several other smaller changes are planned at the railway station before the World Ice Hockey Championship, which starts in May 2019. New light signs, four new cash registers in the waiting room, new plasters for glass surfaces, a new graphical orientation system and the installation of a drywall between the restaurant and the waiting room on the second floor are expected.

Moreover, the lights should be cleaned and changed, and the station plans to remove the visual smog and clean the whole station, TASR reported.

There is also a plan to completely reconstruct the railway station in the future. A working group was approved in December 2018, with the aim to propose a comprehensive and long-term solution for the development and modernisation of the station.
